As much as I would love to curse loudly about this company, I will do my best to write a honest and (semi) unbiased opinion. :-) The move it your self company U-Haul has not only wronged me once, but twice :-(

I am the type of person who likes to give people second chances, and this for the most part goes for services as well, as long as they admit fault and try to please me. In September 1996 my husband and I reserved a trailer and a trailer hitch for my car to go one way from Vermont to Illinois. We received a letter in the mail and when I called 2 days before we actually needed the trailer, they said it was in stock, and there was no problem.

When we arrived to get the hitch put on our car we were told they not only didn’t have the hitch, but they didn’t ever try to get one, and there was not one in the whole state that would fit my car. We had no other choice but to wait.

We waited 5 days! yes FIVE days, for a hitch to come in and finally on the fifth day we were told they were not going to be able to get one. I was very upset and after explaining how our Jobs were at stake, and we REALLY needed to get to IL, they helped us out. They Gave us a 17 foot truck with an auto transport (all four wheels off the ground) to tow our car behind. They gave this to us for only what the cost of the trailer we had reserved was quoted as. It was generous on their part, but about 5 days late.

After arriving in Illinois, we planned to rent an actual truck (not a trailer) and move all of our belongings to Alabama. U-Haul had been generous to us in Vermont and I was sure they would make sure we were happy repeat customers. We reserved a 14 foot truck, and an Auto transport for our car. When it was the day to get the truck, it was like Deja’ vu, Once again the had no truck, and no transport. We would have gone else where if that were an option but we were stuck to wait it out. Two days later we were given a 14 Foot truck, but no Auto Transport. a day later (that we were charged for) we were given a broken Tow Dolly (only the front two wheels off the ground). The Tow Dolly had no tail lights so we had to buy a $35 set of lights that were magnetic to stick on the trunk of our car to meet the law. The U-Haul people hooked the car up, hooked the lights up and off we went.

About 100 miles into our trip we realized the lights were moving around on the trunk of our car, and the cords were not very secure. When we arrived the next morning in Alabama, we found scratches all over the trunk of our new 1996 Mitsubishi Galant!

We immediately called U-Haul, as we had paid the extra money to insure our car on the trip since it was a Tow Dolly, and they directed us to their insurance carrier. The insurance carrier said that because the lights were removable even though U-Haul attached them, we could have "moved" them causing the damage. We also had our insurance company look at it and they said we had $1000.00 worth of paint damage.

After many months of arguing with the insurance company and U-Haul, we

Never received an apology.

We never received a refund.

and

We have never used U-Haul again for a long distance move.

Two times we were hurt by this company, and even though they made good on the first incident on our trip from Vermont to Illinois, they washed their hands of us when all we wanted was to use the extra coverage we purchased because of their lack of maintaining properly reserved trucks and accessories.

I DO NOT RECOMMEND U-Haul to anyone for a long distance move, and I don’t suggest wasting your money on their extra insurance.
