Renting in the summer, we found, trucks are in high demand and they’ll pretty much give you anything running. The first truck broke down about 800 miles from Dallas. Middle of no where, 100 degree heat. After 4-5 hours a tow truck finally made it to us. The truck couldn’t be fixed, so they said we’d have to get a new one. There was no real U-haul place, so they towed us out to this guys farm. He had several trucks (most missing wheels and such) in a field, and apparently one ran. We had to move all our stuff into the new truck ourselves, and then they made us pay more money (converting this to two separate trips) The second truck made it about 300 miles. Several more hours on the side of the road and another tow truck. This time they thought they fixed it. Made it another hundred miles. Broke down again. Third truck — this time my spouse had left so the U-haul place felt sorry for me and helped move the stuff. The third truck also broke down; it was fixed and ultimately made it to California, but then broke down again on the way to the U-haul center to return it.
