My wife and I moved from Iowa to Southern California and the trip couldn’t have been worse. I’ll try to keep this short. When we went to leave the morning after loading our truck, we noticed the truck leaning to the side. Of course it was a flat tire so we immediately took it back to the local UHaul. Once there, we had to wait over an hour b/c they didn’t have a jack to lift the truck. When we asked the manager if this truck will make it to California, she replied, “It should.” So we were finally on our way. Long story short, we broke down 6 different times on the trip. Mostly overheating problems but at one point fluids were pouring out onto the road and clouds of smoke we’re bellowing out from the truck. The disappointing part was their customer service. When we called from the side of I-80 in 100 degree heat, they told us it’s normal and to keep going. I demanded someone to come out to look at the truck and they said it would be about 4 hours before they can get someone out to us. FOUR HOURS!!! So we had no choice but to wait. Finally someone showed up and this independent mechanic stated that this truck should have NEVER been used for a long-distance trip. He said it is tagged for local use only. By the way, the radio didn’t work, nor did the a/c which made for a long, hot trip. The mechanic also noted that there was a leak in the oil tank and that was the reason for the smoke. There wasn’t anything he could do about that. So we finally arrived in California and the silver car I was towing was completely black…covered in oil. We dropped the truck and tow dolly off and they had the nerve to try to charge us a “cleaning” fee for the tow dolly. Luckily, my friend crawled under the truck and pointed out the leak in the oil tank. They then let us go. We spent weeks going back and forth with UHaul demanding a refund and at first all they were willing to offer was vouchers for a future move. YEAH RIGHT! There was no way we would ever use them again! So finally, after a month of bickering, they refunded almost half of our money. Not only was this the worst moving experience, the company itself was not apologetic at all for the problems we experienced. We later found out through the manager in California that we were given this truck b/c the Iowa office needed to get that specific truck to Arizona via us. If you need to make a local trip, then go ahead and use UHaul…for long-distance, save yourself the stress and look elsewhere.
