Recently we used a U haul to move from California to South Dakota. I will spare you most of the details of the experience. I did not use the centralized reservation service, I called the local dealer, but this didn’t seem to make a difference in the end.
I saved almost $2,000 by reserving a truck close to the Nevada state line. This meant a three hour drive for me to pick up the truck, but for that kind of savings it was worth it. Apparently, they charge extra for Californians. Use their Internet quoting system to play around with different pick up and drop off cities to find the best rates.
I received a call from U haul customer service the morning I was to pick up the truck, informing me they did not have a truck and did not know when one would be available. I reminded them that I had made the reservations 4 months prior. Although I was being very polite and professional, they hung up on me.
It took dozens of phone calls to various customer service centers, and a lot of politeness on my behalf to get a truck diverted to my pick up point before this was resolved. It did take over 24 hours for a truck to arrive, but I believe my politeness paid off in the end.
THE BOTTOM LINE: Regardless of who you call to reserve the truck, make your reservations for at least 2 days before you actually need the truck. This gets you a buffer period that will be needed if they don’t hold up their end of the deal.
They allow plenty of time for your trip anyway but it would be better to pay a late return fee in the unlikely event the equipment is ready for you on the day promised.
