Not worth the price you pay. U Haul We are a military family and decided to move ourselves from Texas to Colorado and decided that UHAUL sounded like a good place to use since ...

After 20 years of moving as a military family, we decided to move ourselves from the Baltimore, MD area to the Boston, MA area in August 2003. I reserved a 26′ U-Haul truck a month before our move and received an email confirmation.

I called the Baltimore, MD Regional U-Haul office 3 times in advance of the move to make sure everything was set, the most recent time on the Friday before our Monday scheduled move. During this last call, the agent informed me that NO U-Haul 26′ trucks had automatic (this turned out to be untrue) and I also requested a pick up time of 9 am on Monday morning. I was assured that I would be called by 5 pm the day before our pick (Sunday) up with a pick up time and location.

When I was not contacted by 6:30 pm Sunday night, I again called the Baltimore Regional Office and was told I had not been called with a pick up time/location because my local U-Haul office was closed Sunday! I could call them when they opened Monday morning.

Monday at 7:30 am I called my local office to discover that my pick up location was a ONE HOUR round trip from my home in Emmitsburg, MD. I was told to call the Emmitsburg office which opened at 7 am to find out my truck pick up time. When I called this office, I was told they didn’t open until 9 am.

I then called the Baltimore Regional office to find out why I had a pick up location so far from my house. The agent said U-Haul would give me 100 extra miles since I had to go so far to pick up the truck. BIG deal! I also informed her that I would not even be able to find out when I could get the truck until 9 am. She was completely unconcerned, and said I had requested a 9 am pick up, so what was the problem?

At 9 am I reached the Emmitsburg office to discover that they did have my truck and I could pick it up anytime, but they did not have the 3 dozen furniture blankets and the two hand trucks which I had also reserved. The woman I spoke with said that she had asked the Regional Office why we weren’t getting the trucks and blankets and was told we should be happy we were getting the truck.

Before leaving to pick up the truck, I again called the Baltimore office and asked why we weren’t getting the hand trucks and blankets. I was told that none were available, but they could call around and see if they could find any for us. They could have cared LESS that we were stuck with no way to move boxes or pad furniture. After being on hold for quite a while, the agent said that I could get one hand truck and 6 furniture blankets from a U-Haul rental place in my town, but that was all which would be available. She did offer to get me some equipment from Westminster, MD, which is a ONE HOUR each way drive from where I lived! I had her reserve the hand truck and blankets and then asked her what I was supposed to do about the other hand truck and 30 missing furniture blankets and she said she didn’t know.

We had no problems at the Emittsburg office renting the truck, which turned out to have automatic , despite what U-Haul in Baltimore had told us. The rental woman in this office told me our experience with U-Haul not having reserved trucks or equipment available was very common and that we had actually been lucky getting the truck.

I did go to the local U-Haul place where the truck and blankets were, to discover that Baltimore U-Haul had never reserved the hand truck and 6 blankets for me. No surprise. Luckily, they were still there and I was able to rent them. I then had to go to Home Depot and purchase another hand truck so we could load the truck.

Due to U-Haul’s incompetence, we were not able to start loading our van until almost noon. I cannot describe how extremely stressful it was dealing with U-Haul and not knowing if we would even get a truck until the day of our move. I would like to add that despite U-Haul’s claims, there is NO way you can fit the contents of a 3-4 bedroom house in a 26′ van. On Tuesday we had to rent an additional 14′ U-Haul truck because we could not fit everything in the 26′ van. To rent this van, we simply walked into a local U-Haul rental place where we saw a lot of trucks parked and had no trouble getting a van immediately. We also discovered they had plenty of hand trucks and furniture pads available, despite the claim from the Baltimore office that no hand trucks or furniture pads were available in our area.

My advice would be to seriously look into other truck rental places before considering U-Haul. Their customer service has to be the worst in the business. If you do go with U-Haul, do NOT make reservations through their web site or national 800 number, do it locally.
