Almost a Smooth Move U Haul

Not bad for the money! U Haul We just moved to Austin last week from St. Louis and took a 17ft. Uhaul. We reserved the truck months in advance and got a reasonable rate....

Slow and Steady Wins the Race!! U Haul We have moved more times than I can count. Each time, we rent a U-haul truck to get us where we are going. My husband is an expert mover,...

Recently I relocated about 350 miles. My move was done over Labor Day Weekend and it was a little difficult to get a reservation for a truck.

I ended up renting a truck from U-Haul. Contrary to what I have read, I made my reservation online. I obviously had not checked out epinions first. The website was easy to navigate, get quotes on, and make my reservation on.

Just like the website had promised, a representative called me the next day with the name and phone number of the agent closest to my house that would have a truck available on the date of my move. I called and firmed up my reservation with them and all was well.

Going to pick up the truck went off without a hitch, literally. I had order a hitch to tow my car with and had decided against it. Changing my reservation at the last minute was no problem, and there was no extra charge for doing so.

This is where the problems, or should I say deceptions began. The charge when I went to pay it was $100.00 more than my quote. The explanation for this was that there was a deposit for the truck. If this is stated anywhere on the website, I did not see it, and I read through everything pretty thoroughly. The only thing I saw about a deposit was that I must put at least a $5.00 down at the time of booking to hold my reservation, which I did.

The trip was uneventful. The truck did well, it was actually pretty comfortable and not bad to drive.

The big problems began when I went to return the truck on the other end. The U-Haul agency where I returned it found a dent in the bumper which had been there when I had picked up the truck and tried to blame it on me in order to keep my deposit. I explained that the dent was there and that it was noted in my paperwork. He checked and it was. Next they tried to tell me that I was not returning the truck with as much fuel as was in it when I picked it up and wanted to charge me an exorbitant price per gallon. We actually had to call where I had picked the truck up from to straighten this up.

I guess if you don’t go over your mileage, they have to find some way to keep your deposit. That’s right the one they don’t tell you about in the first place. I was paying with cash, and it was just lucky that I had an extra hundred dollars on me at the time. Usually I don’t.

U-Haul does enough business to not have to resort to deceptive practices. I don’t really know whether to blame U-Haul, or just the place that I returned the truck to. Luckily for me, though, it’s pretty hard to pull one over on this cookie.
