Avoid U Haul at all costs! U Haul In the past four years I have moved twice. I used U-Haul for both moves even though I swore I would never use them again after the first one...

We had an absolutely terrible moving experience with U-Haul. Here are the highlights:

-Restrictions of the method of payment were placed upon us at the time of pick-up which were not explained in advance. The location we were scheduled for would not accept Mastercard payment–even though many U-Haul locations do.

-The truck of the size we requested was not available for our long-distance (900 mile) move. They were unable to provide a larger truck that day or the following day. This meant we have to set a couple thousand dollars worth of our possessions out as trash simply because they would not fit in the truck.

-When we explained how difficult not having the larger truck would be for us, U-Haul employees were unwilling to do anything and responded with hostility to our insistence that we find a better solution.

-The vehicle trailer we rented was not properly attached to the truck hitch. The connection was very difficult to operate properly. U-Haul was not helpful when we called and asked for help. We had to wait overnight (when we planned to be on the road) for a service guy to come out and look at the trailer. While he found a way to rig the trailer up, he couldn’t figure out how to get the car on the trailer and be able to open the doors. After some thought and discussion with him, the least worst solution we came up with was to crawl out a car window and cover the window with a tarp. Despite our best efforts, over a 900 mile drive, the tarp attachment damaged the paint on our car.

-The truck was really in terrible shape — we knew to expect this as U-Haul is the low cost option. But, it was worse than we expected. The back door on the truck was coming apart such that closing the door seemed impossible. It took us 20 minutes to figure out how we had to hold some bolts in place as we slid the door in order to get the door to close.

-We called and wrote to U-Haul during and after our experience to complain. They never acknowledged that they had not lived up to their agreement and they refused to refund any part of what we paid.

-Based on my experience, I would recommend that you avoid U-Haul at all costs! They are clearly the low cost option, but I can’t imagine that the additional cost of another company’s better rental truck and better service wouldn’t be worth it. Be especially careful about relying on U-Haul for a long distance move — our experience shows just how terrible one’s experience can be.
