Avoid U Haul at all Costs!!! U Haul We had an absolutely terrible moving experience with U-Haul. Here are the highlights: -Restrictions of the method of payment were placed...
I needed to use a mid sized truck to move in town this fall, and used U-Haul several times as they were near by and had low rates. This was a mistake that I paid dearly for.
The first day the truck I had reserved had been sent out, and the only choice was to take one from a pool of trucks that had to be returned to a different town - about 20 miles away. The rate was about $20 a day higher than I had been quoted on the phone. The quality of the truck was indifferent, but far better than one I had rented from them years ago.
I needed to use the truck for an additional day. I called up to extend my reservation/use of the truck and was quoted a daily rate, and I confirmed the location of the return site. When I returned the truck, I was billed about $30 more than the rate I was quoted.
The second time I rented a truck I used a different U-Haul outlet in a nearby town, hoping to avoid a repetition of the poor service and misleading rate terms I’d previously experienced. In fact, my girlfriend highly recommended this place, perhaps because she didn’t want to drive against rush hour traffic again to give me a lift back.
The truck was in extraordinarily poor condition, visually and physically. It also contained a hand truck and bag of moving blankets attached to the wall. A note on these indicated that if the seal on these was broken you would be charged several dollars a day for their use. I have my own dollies and pads, and asked for these to be removed - after all they occupy the storage space of the truck and will get in the way when loading. My request was refused. When I remarked to the service writer of the generally poor condition of the truck, he said ‘It’s a rental…’.
So, for the next two days I used the truck to move my things. It had the second worst steering of any vehicle I’ve ever driven, and the worst throttle response. Good thing I was backing up to brick buildings that weren’t mine.
When I returned the truck the sack of moving pads had fallen off the side wall and were sitting on the floor of the truck. I was assessed a $30 cleaning fee. I objected to this as I had left the truck clean, had not used the pads, and had not knocked them off the wall. I told the agent that I shouldn’t have to pay for what was poorly secured to begin with. She refused and called the manager so I could discuss it with him. He refused to reduce or waive the ‘cleaning’ fee.
For my third move with U-Haul I made an on-line reservation at the first location. This reservation requires a mandatory, non-refundable credit card payment, for my ‘convenience’. I had my reservation confirmed by email. I called the rental location the day before my move to confirm the truck.
When I went there I dealt with a very nice and capable agent and we went through the whole rental sequence, when it came time to complete the rental, the agent said that I had been ‘banned’ from renting from U-Haul. No reason was given. I asked to speak to a manager about this and a call was made to some customer service center, where I was again told that I was ‘banned for life’ by U-Haul, for no particular reason.
Stuck and knowing that I was contractually obligated to complete my move, I called around - at noon on Saturday - to see what I could rent. Ryder was very obliging, but did not have the type of truck I needed. Budget had the right kind of truck, and a personable rental agent very professionally took me through the rental process. That truck was newer, in very good condition and operated perfectly.
I will never rent from U-Haul again and will go to great lengths to assist my friends from using them. Although their initial rates seem low, the actual rental costs are no lower than their competitors, the quality of their equipment is embarassingly low, and their service abysmal. Do yourself a favor and rent from someone else!
