When you need to move cheaply U Haul Oh, sure, I've heard all the complaints. The trucks are uncomfortable, hard to load, hard to drive etc. But moving is by its very nature...
I recently decided to choice U-Haul to move cross-country from Savannah to LA. Their prices were less than the competition, so I thought I has made a good choice. Little did I know.
when I went to pickup my fourteen foot truck it was absolutely filthy. I told those at U-Haul it looked liked a homeless person and their dog had been living in there, their response was “its possible its been sitting there for months . . . but we just put a new engine.” Well the original truck didn’t even start as the battery had been drained by a faulty light switch. As I had ZERO confidence this truck would make it to my storage unit cross town let alone cross country , I asked that another be located. Luckily there was another truck available cross town. when I picked it up , it was again filthy in the back. after I loaded my belonging I noticed that it had very little pickup and the left hand turn signal light was out. they fixed the light, but in addressing my concerns about the engines and transmission they stated ” they don’t let us do nothing , you’ll be fine.”
after heading across country I was anything but fine. the truck had no pickup and was unable to go above 65MPH. It was also slurping gas and got less than 8 mpg. AS the first half of my journey was on relatively flat land , the performance was poor but passable. when I hit steep inclines in New Mexico, the transmission was slipping and eventually the truck would go above 25MPH.
I called U-Haul’s roadside service and they were horrendous. It sounded like everyone I talked to was barely out of high school and was reading from a pre-determined cheat sheet. After telling them I thought the issue was with the transmission, they continually asked “if the truck had gas,” or “battery power.” I luckily got the dying 14 foot truck to Grants , New Mexico. Teo,the owner, was extremely nice . He confirmed that the transmission was shot. He was very sympathetic. He and his son and grandson loaded my belongings in a newer more reliable 17 foot truck and I was back on the road in 30 minutes.
when I arrived in LA , I was transfered 3 times before I got to a regional manager who had NO idea where the closet drop-off location was.
my advice to anyone moving any significant distance and wanting reliable transportation. Think twice before EVER considering U-Haul.
