If I had it to do over again… U Haul ...would I rent from U-Hell? 4/8/04 UPDATE... No, I will not rent from U-Haul. Never again. Why? See the bottom of this review. I'd do...

My wife and I rented a 24′ U-Haul truck from their location in Scotch Plains New Jersey run Sami Ferizi. We used the truck for a local haul between Woodbridge and New York City, about a 60 mile round trip.

I had no idea what I was getting into.

IF A UHAUL TRUCK BREAKS DOWN YOU MAY HAVE TO WAIT OVER 3 HOURS FOR ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE.

YOU MAY BE CHARGED FOR A “HEAVY TOW” THAT CAN COST HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS.

IF YOU WALK AWAY FROM THIER BROKEN DOWN TRUCK EVEN AFTER NOTIFYING THE POLICE YOU CAN BE CHARGE WITH ABANDONING A VEHICLE.

UHAUL MAY CHARGE YOU AN ABANDONMENT FEE.

BE AWARE OF YOUR DOWNSIDE RISK WHEN YOU RENT A UHAUL TRUCK.

Having driven through the Lincoln Tunnel, we were about 5 miles south of the tunnel whenoOur truck starting moving very slowly (even though I pressed harder on the accelerator) going up hill on route 1-9 South near Tonelle Ave in Jersey City New Jersey as we were returning to Woodbridge. Smoke came out of the hood and their was a bang (not very loud). The truck stopped dead and would not move forward.

We were totally blocking a lane of the 2-lane road in a a part of Jersey City. There were tractor and cars that had to drive into the oncoming opposite lane to get around the truck we rented.

I immediately called the “hotline” number. It was about 1:30 a.m. on December 28th. 3 hours later (yes, really) no one from uhaul had showed despite 4 calls to uhaul with one of our cell phone already with a dead battery. By that time we called the police. Two squad cars had arrived to control the traffic in this dangerous situation.

When we asked uhaul when someone would show their responses included: 1) we need the exact location not just the road and town

2) we are dispatching right now

“Dispatching” apparently meant calling many or a few (often or infrequently) somebody to the truck. It seems that this company had “difficulty” finding people to provide road side service.

1) When you make a reservation for a truck. If you cancel you get billed $50, but if they don’t have the truck (which happens apparently fairly often) they give you nothing.

2) If you truck breaks down on a highway uphill and stops moving. You may have to pay for the tow. If it is raining cold and dangerous and 3 hours after you call uhaul for help nobody from uhual shows up, you can be charged for abandoning a vehicle if you walk away even if you have already notified the police. Also you may be charge a fee by uhaul for abandoning their truck when they they have not shown after 4 hours.
