Over the past weekend, I rented a 5′*8′ trailer for a quick run to my sister’s house a city North from Houston. Actually in the end, I drove about 560 miles round trip on Saturday. The purpose of the trip was to deliver some furniture to my sister and pick up baby stuff they no longer needed and wanted my wife and me to use with our baby due in June.
The bad experience started on Friday when I went to pick up the trailer. The dealer whom serviced my account was a one person operation. When I arrived at his office, I had to wait 15 minutes for him to walk back from the truck lot where he was supposedly helping another customer. That was the first clue I was not dealing with a reputable business.
After completing the paperwork, I was surprised to find that the furniture pads were now twice the price quoted over the phone just the day before. Unfortunately I needed them so I had to grin and just go on. The dealer said, grab the pads you need and head to the truck lot so I can hook your trailer to your car. Ok, I thought only a couple more minutes.
I went to the truck lot and again waited for another ten minutes for this guy to get his act together. Finally he came out and asked to see the ticket so he could find my trailer. It was at the back of a line of trailers, which took a few more minutes to move around. What a pain dealing with this shop which is closest to my house. After all this he got me hooked up.
After hooking the trailer to my car, the guy asked to check the lights. He said it all checked out. I was a bit surprised to find out later in the rental that the entire right side of the trailer had no lights working. I found the cause of this problem, which turned out to be lack of connections from the main wiring to the lights themselves. This I found annoying since for several hours on the road, when I changed lanes, the other drivers had no advance warning, unless they saw the lights on my car. That was a bit more dangerous than I like!!!
I was given procedures for returning the rental after hours to the same lot. I did so, after driving from Houston to Fort Worth and back. I also had loaded and unloaded the trailer twice and had even set up the furniture at both my sister’s house and my house. Needless to say I was a bit tired. I did return the trailer that night instead of waiting until business hours the next day. I left a voice mail message for the business as instructed. That business did not call back with the amount of the refund that would be given on my credit card as was due upon return of the trailer. I guess I will see if they actually did make that refund.
I would not recommend using U-Haul unless necessary. They have a bad habit of putting trashy vehicles on the road which endangers the other drivers as well as the poor person driving the vehicle. In the case of a trailer, I would hate to get a ticket because of faulty equipment that I was told to take since it supposedly worked. In the past my best experience involved using Budget, which I have done twice.
