I’ve had the unfortunate experience of using U-Haul and dealing with their customer service and I’m hoping anyone who reads this can learn from my experience.

I was moving from Jersey City to Elizabeth NJ and needed a small truck. Without the luxury of a car, I had to settle for the nearest truck rental and that was U-Haul. 3 weeks before the move, I made a reservation in person, paying $150 upfront as a deposit, for a 24 hours rental of a 10′ truck. On the day of my move, I cycled to the U-Haul to pick up the truck and was told that 10′ trucks were not available, and that I had to pay more to take the 14′. Worst of all, I was given only 6 hours to complete the move, because they had too many customers that day and the truck had to be shared. And no, there was no discount for having a 6 hours rental. Having taken a day off work (and asking several friends to do the same), my moving plans were wreaked havoc by U-Haul’s deceitful sales tactics. All the customer service would say is basically take it or leave it because our business is too good…not even an apology. And they were even going to charge me extra if I canceled the reservation.

Besides this, the U-Haul trucks and equipments in the lot were poorly maintained. The exterior of the trucks look like they were bound for the junkyard, the interior were dusty and dirty, the automatic gears are clunky, the steering wheel wobbles and wouldn’t steer straight. If you’re not an experienced truck driver (how many DIY movers are?!), you and other road-users are in serious danger driving one of these dilapidated jalopies.

Well, I finally rushed through and finished the move thanks to the herculean efforts of my friends. However, we were still angry at U-Haul for making our move miserable, so I got to their website and tried writing to their customer service. No response at all, even after a year! Next, I tried writing about my experience on the website’s forums and asking for clarifications of their policy. When I checked back on their forum page a few days later, I found that they have removed my message. In fact, if you look through their forum carefully, you’ll only see messages that praise their service. That’s censorship at the worst!

What worse can a company get than one spends more efforts promoting their deceitful policy than improving their business practices? Nah…they don’t even want your feedback, unless it’s good!

The only ‘positive’ thing I can think about is their cheap price. However, it is certainly not value for money cheap but a dishonest, low-down deal. And don’t forget, they won’t tell you upfront that their insurance is mandatory, so I ended up paying $80 for an advertised rate of $29.99.

Despite all of this, you might still come away with a good experience at a cheap price, but consider yourself lucky.

If you would not rather put it to luck, go for Penske trucks for an equally competitive rate and a better experience.
