I have rented from Uhaul 3 times and it was 3 times too many. The first time they told me that I hadn’t put enough gas in when the needle was well past the starting point. I had to drive to a gas station and then they charged me for the kilometres I used to get there. The second time was a problem all around as the truck broke down about 5 min from the depot and it took them over an hour to come and rescue my father, who was driving it. The lineups were ridiculous as they only had one person manning the desk on the last day of the month! Again, they tried to argue that the gas was not where it should be but my dad is a big guy and not one to mess with so they finally relented. The final time was yesterday. When I called to make the reservation I specifically said that I did not want the insurance. I was just moving a couch so I asked for a cargo van and was told there were none available. On the day of the pickup my friend was going to be doing the driving so she went to pick up the van. She was told I asked for insurance, she wasn’t given an opportunity to inspect the vehicle as it was near closing time, she had to clean the snow off the windshield so it was driveable, the cab had chips all over the seat and ashes from cigarettes (in a non smoking van) in the cupholder. As she was getting settled, she realized the reason no cargo van was available was because the employee was driving it as his personal car. The next day when I called to dispute the insurance charge he told me he’d call me back. I waited 3 hours and no callback so I called him. He directed me to the head office. I admit to losing my temper after about 15 min arguing with the woman who stated that the reservation said I wanted insurance so I was responsible and she wasn’t going to reverse the charge. I understand that people probably try to get out of paying insurance after the fact when they don’t have any problems. She claimed that it doesn’t matter what I said when I made the reservation, what matters is pick up time. I asked why did the employee even bother to ask if I wanted it then. Long and short of it was, I got stuck with a $104 bill for a 2 hour rental because she refused to believe me, or even listen to what I said.
