Oh, boy, where to begin with this “adventure in moving”?
Move was to help my neighbor’s daughter on her way to school. The truck reserved was a 14 foot (small) truck. weeks passed, we went to the dealer to pickup the vehicle. 8:00 in the AM, and no truck. Well, at least we were in good company, there were 3 other people all waiting for that same size truck.
9:00 am… Hey, guess what! Nope, no truck
10:00 am… well, at least there is a Perkins across the street; still no truck.
11:15ish watch a truck come in to dealership, and make our way there, Nope, not ours.
12:30. 2 more trucks here finally, but they are gigantic! There was no car trailer to take our car for the return trip. Dealer said something about a shortage in the area, and “he would be damn lucky to see one this month”.
Dealer says this is all that is coming in today, take it or not. So we do. Truck has ZERO gasoline in it. Begin move late with a trip to put some gas in the truck (dealer said truck had to be returned with same fuel as left, marked paperwork at empty; more about this later)
Packing was hard, with so much room it was difficult to keep items from shifting. Got neighbor’s daughter to drive car for us. It really didn’t take a whole lot of convincing, sine this fine piece of machinery we rented smelled like the vomit-comet after a few test flights.
great mileage this pig, er, truck gets. About 3 mpg on a well worn diesel, looking to be from mid 1980’s
Just east of Denver the truck dies at a fuel stop. called 800# and got treated like a moron. 6 hrs pass. mechanic shows, decides it’s a fuel pump, and takes off to get one.
4 hrs pass, mechanic back, no fuel pump, says “customer service” (what a laugh that term is with this crowd) would be delivering a replacement “in a bit”.
Guess what, another Perkins! Off for dinner, French Toast again.
As we waited for that “bit” of time to pass (actually 4-1/2 hours) another u-h*ll limped into the truck-stop with no power steering. Hey, there is the “customer service” with a truck. yep, you guessed it, another ancient behemoth. they moved the stuff into new truck and said “gee, you didn’t need a truck this big!” (well, no kidding, great observation, love these U-Haul staffers, swift thinking lot they are!)
back on the road, finally make it to Boulder. takes 1 hour to unload her “stuff” and head to the nearest dealer to dump this junk off. The lady on the phone (supposed to call before dropping truck off) sent us to a “moving center” that was farther away. Next day called to get a verification of refund on the deposit, and got told they were billing me for fuel, because it was lass than 1/4 tank. yep, no kidding. After dealing with several rather militant u-haulers I finally got me deposit back.
