I used U-haul a couple of years ago, and I helped a friend that has used them.
My personal experience was not that bad: they had the truck I reserved, although manual (I asked for an automatic). I also didn’t like that the tank was on Empty and I had to find quickly a gas station, and approximate in advance how much gas I am going to use (I was wrong, when I returned the van it still had plenty of gas in it).
The van was clean, but I was not provided with the dolly they said came with the van.
As the others have written before me, the quality of the van is really really low (yes, one wonders how come this van still runs), but you get what you pay for.
One thing I found UHaul really good for are their moving supplies which are reasonably priced (I especially recommend the green plastic sticky wrap, I really protects your “breakables”).
Now my friend’s experience was terrible. He made the reservation over the phone, but when he came to pick up the van, they said he had no reservation. So there he was scrambling to other rental agencies where he had to overpay and get a van for just half a day.
So advice: always go there and make the reservation in person and get the receipt.
Also, show up early as they tend to give vans an a first come first serve basis.
Once when I was there to buy moving supplies, and person complained that the van was still in the parking lot and would not start; they brought in a mechanic who said the alternator is gone so when the person asked for a replacement they said “we only can return your money”.
For some reason (read: really really slow employees who don’t care if they get fired), there’s always a line.
I had better experience with other moving vans, so spend 50% more if you can afford it.
