If you rent a trailer you should make sure you have a Hitch U Haul From Uhaul.com you could see one way trailer cheapest, about $25. However, before you make reservations for the trailer, please make sure...

The main beef I have with U-Haul is that your ‘reservation’ is not really a reservation. If you reserve a truck and they have one there, you got it. But they make no guarantee that they will actually have a truck in the size you require at that time, although they’ll gladly ‘reserve’ it for you. There is no national computer system, so each store has no idea what items that one-way renters are going to return and when. Of course, they don’t tell you that when you make the reservation (we didn’t find out until weeks after our move). If making a reservation months/weeks in advance, check up every day the week before your planned rental, and have a backup. We were **very** lucky in that they actually had a 26′ truck and a car trailer in our small town the day we needed it, even though the ‘reservation’ was made two months in advance. A co-worker of mine was not so lucky…he was SOL for his move and had to make other arrangements the day he was supposed to me. We rented the truck to drive from GA to AZ.

The truck itself had a lot of mileage (or kilometerage, since it was a Canadian truck) on it, and one headlight didn’t work when they gave it to us (didn’t realize until later). The car trailer was missing a working tailight, which we had to wait for them to fix.

Our trouble began at a rest area in MS on Sunday morning. I noticed that a softball-size section of tread was missing from a tire on the car trailer. We didn’t want to risk a blowout, so we called the U-Haul toll-free customer service line. We were told it would be many hours before they could make it out to us because it was Sunday morning. My husband asked if we could get it repaired ourselves and be reimbursed for the cost. He was told ‘No’. They then told us to drive into the nearest town so they didn’t have to come out to the rest area to fix it. We really didn’t want to drive more on the tire, but we did so because we wanted it fixed. We called back periodically for the next four hours to check up. One time, I asked again if we could get it fixed on our own and be reimbursed for the cost. This time, we were told ‘of course’. Huh? I have to say, I did blow up at the guy on the phone, and he was apologetic. We had wasted four hours of driving time thanks to UHaul!! So we found the nearest tire store (Tire Kingdom) and they fixed it in 15 minutes. We are now devoted fans of Tire Kingdom.

Fortunately, the rest of the trip was uneventful, and the truck performed all right. It doesn’t travel very quickly as you might have guessed, and hills were very slow going.

Then we returned the truck in AZ. We couldn’t find our paperwork at first, and we wouldn’t have been able to turn it in without it. I was flabbergasted that a company as big as UHaul did not have a national computer system with which to check on reservations. They absolutely had no record of our rental other than our paperwork. Also, they tried to charge us for extra mileage until we explained to them in small words that the odometer was in kilometers (didn’t believe us until we pointed out the truck said Trans Canada in very large letters on the front). I was about to start a riot if they didn’t reimburse us for the trailer tire, but fortunately that wasn’t an issue. We actually toted the bum tire with us and gave it to them, so that probably helped.

Things to remember about UHaul (buyer beware):

-A ‘reservation’ really isn’t a reservation

-Make sure you do not lose your paperwork as they do not have a national reservation system. You are SOL if you lose the paperwork

-Show up before the store opening time the day you rent, so they don’t run out of trucks by the time they get to you. You need to do this even if you have a reservation.

-If you are in a serious time crunch, UHaul is not the company for you.

Since I am usually on a pretty fixed timeline when I move (military), I will not be renting from UHaul again.
