My experiences with U-Haul are different than most probably from the aspect that I used to work there. I don’t like this company much from either an employee, or a customer’s point of view. I have been both.
My first objection is that they reserve as many trucks as they get calls on regardless of what they actually have on hand. They do this in the hope that they will be able to pull in the trucks on time, but all to often I found this doesn’t work. It’s a good business tactic if it works. Then the freely change sizes of the trucks to what they do have usually upgrading the size (not caring if you can drive it). If they have to issue you a smaller truck they try to explain how this trailer they are attaching to it will make up the difference. I found that most people don’t like pulling trailers behind these trucks either. It takes experience to drive with these attached. It affects the way you back up, and the speed at which you can travel safely.
Also when they are acquiring trucks for reservations they always give priority to those that make them the most money. So, I’m sorry if they place you are moving to is close enough that it’s not expensive. You probably won’t get what you are reserving. And, the funny thing is they don’t care. No matter how many people they anger, no matter how people say they won’t be back. The constant population growth of urban areas keeps them in business.
Oh, but there is light at the end of the tunnel. U-Haul has a price matching policy, NEVER EVER take the price they quote you. Call around (usually Budget is the cheapest) and they will beat their price. If you think it’s expensive feel free to haggle. I have seen many managers change the price to get a long distance reservation.
They treat their employees horribly too, but that is another review for a later time.
