I admit it. I am a transient. I have moved to 3 different cities, and to 12 different homes, in the past 5 years. This lifestyle necessitates use of self-moving materials, including trucks. Let me just say, I had used UHaul several times before the incident I am about to describe, with few problems, other than very dirty, obviously unmaintained trucks (no registration, inspection, etc.). But they got me, and my stuff, where it needed to go.
On this particular occasion, however, we were not even moving our entire houseful of goods, just a sleeper sofa from our home to my parents’ home about 1 1/2 hours away. We got the truck, and were able to load the sofa in with no problem. We headed out to my parents’, and got there in one piece, no problems so far (but another dirty truck). After removing the sofa from the truck, we needed to load in a loveseat and dresser. Well, UHaul trucks all have pull-down ramps. We had been using this particular one all day, with no trouble. But, when my 50-or-so mom and I tried to load in the loveseat, BANG! Down go my mother, the loveseat, and the ramp, into the (busy) street. I was in the truck, holding the other end of the loveseat, so it didn’t completely crash down on top of my mom, but it was bad enough that she was lying in the middle of the street, under a metal ramp and half under the loveseat. Fortunately, she just got a very nasty roadburn, and some bruising, which I promptly went inside and took pictures of (she was bleeding, but didn’t need stitches or anything). I also took pictures of the ramp; the thing’s hooks that affix it to the truck were sheared off completely on one side, and judging from the rust on them, had been for a while. Well, we got everything else onto the truck, and with assurance from my mom that she was ok, we headed home. When we returned the truck, we calmly explained to the gum-smacking 16 year old at the counter what had occured. Not blinking an eye, she said “That’ll be $150.” We stared at her. I asked to see the manager. After re-explaining the problem, I said, “You can’t expect us to pay for this, after you almost killed my mother.” She looked at us disdainfully and said she didn’t have the authotization to bring down the price, but she would give us the truck rental free, and make us pay the mileage. We continued to argue that this was unacceptable. Well, to make an extremely long story shorter, we wound up paying over $100 for the rental of the killer truck, and of course received no apology of any sort. After we threatened to sue based on the photos, their lawyers sent us a $250 check to keep us quiet… HEY, I guess that didn’t work!!!
