I would like to relay my experience of a UHaul cargo van I rented this weekend.
(I will forgo any complaint about the monstrous $1.69 mileage charges.)
While loading some boxes in the back of the van, the wind closed the back door shut– and locked me inside. Thing is, all interior lock indicators showed ‘red’, meaning the doors should be unlocked. However, both back doors and side doors would NOT open. I tried locking and unlocking the doors manually from the inside, to no avail.
With the key in hand and no cel phone, I was dangerously imprisoned in the back of this van for 20 MINUTES, until a passerby was able to open the door from the outside. I could not have gone into the driver’s area because of the steel cage partitioning it off.
I contacted the rental agent and he expressed little concern and even less restitution.
I cannot stress to people the danger this poses to anyone renting these vans. I urge them to have the Central Locking Systems of all their vans examined, before this results in the death of a more unfortunate individual.
I feel obligated to contact the NTSB or appropriate authority about the locks.
