Well I will start off by saying I will NEVER and I mean NEVER use U-Haul ever again. And I am moving AGAIN in June.
This story starts off in a big ole’ city.Trenton, NJ, that is. We were moving to good ole" Pa.Now this is about a 2 and 1/2 hour drive. Or that is what it should have been.
To start off the "Day of Hell", I had ordered the truck about a month in advanced. Knowing we were moving and need the truck at a certain time. We were told since I called in advanced,atruck will be waithing for us on that day at 6:00 am. Well, the truck was not even ready nor there. Not even one truck. So there we are with 6 men waiting at my house to move us. Thank goodness we have good friends who would wait. When we finally got the truck, It was 3:00pm.Now you do the math…….that was 9 HOURS later than promised. Well it took about and hour to pack all into the truck(with all the men and like I said I knew we were moving, so everything was packed.
Now…..we shut the back door and my husband and 2 other men got into the truck. Start up the truck. Well that is what we thought it would do,but to our surprise the battery was dead.Now granted we did not even have a light on due to it was light out. Nothing was on during the packing of the truck. So the jump the truck and get it started. So we tell each other in 3 hours we will meet at the new house.And off we went in our different directions, getting to our destination. My husband decided to take the turnpike, due to it would be easier than the curvey back roads we all took.
Well about an half hour into my husband drive….just as he got onto the turnpike the truck started to spit and spew. And the sucker died. They had to walk to find a phone,while 4 state troopers passed them and never stopped to help…Hey I had the cell phone on me,I was the one driving alone. Finally the get a hold of U-haul. They said they would send someone out there asap. Well 3 hours later, here comes a tow truck. He jumps the truck and bam they are off again.
Now lets do the math. Truck arrives 3:00 pm, 9 HOURS lates. We get on the road at about 4:30-5:00pm. Now we are behind scheduale by what,11 hours? And the time it took the tow truck to get there……14 hours behind scheduale. Now back on the road at 8-8:30 pm.
Now the guys in the other cars are calling me as I am waiting at my NEW house and asking where are they? At this point I had no Idea.I told them to go and do what they had planned and I will call them in the morning to help move our stuff in. All fine and dandy right? well read on….
Around 11:00 at night I get a collect phone call from my husband ,telling me they are stranded about an hour away from our house.The truck,oh you guessed already? well broke down….AGAIN. Now this time it was the alternater. They called U-Haul, and were told to go to the nearest hotel and get a room and eat, all on U-Haul.Ok that was fine and dandy. But there was one problem. NO car to get them there, I had his wallet,and there was a convention going on in Philadelphia that night, NO ROOMS AVALIBLE….NONE. So they sat in the truck trying to decide what to do. One of the guys had a sister in a nearby town who they called but by this time it was about 2 in the morning. Well they went to her house,she came and picked them up.
They got about 2 hours sleep since they had to be back at the truck by 5:00am. They were also told since they had to switch trucks that there were people to move everything form one truck to the other. Hey that was great.
When they got to the truck, no one was there. No one showed up til 9:00am.Tow truck came and took the men and the truck to U-Haul. Once they got there they were informed that they did not have anyone extra to switch the furniture form the original truck to the new one. So here are the 3 men switching a whole house full form one truck to the other. It took them 4 hours.
Now back to the road……..they were at the new house by 3:00pm the next day. We called the men and moved in. But how was the furniture you say? Well my couch was ripped from one end to the other, 4 of my dining room chairs were broken,unrepairable, and little things were broken. When we first pack the truck of course we put the heavy stuff in back and so on….you know how it is done. But when they had to move it from one truck to the other everything went in backwards.Can’t blame he guys. Everything had shifted while truck was on raod and when door opened coach was stuck on door and RIP. you get the point.
So now I had alot to talk about with U-Haul. Well to put it bluntly…..they did not do a damn thing. No refund , nothing and when it came to the extra day we got charged double, hey we got a new truck…that is what they told me. After fighting with U-Haul for days and then weeks and the months. I decided to call a laywer. There was not much I could do, But when I called BBB……that was a different story. I got free coupons for my next moving experience, No refund though, and they got fined 4,000. I really do not know what for exactly but, hey I feel justice has prevailed alittle.
So the next time you need to move, read this review and you decide if it is cheaper to go with U-Haul….or what we like to call Ur-Hell.
