Do NOT count on U Haul for your important job! U Haul
It worked for me… U Haul After reading all of the negative reviews of U-Haul on Epinions, I was terrified to rent from them. Luckily, my experience wasn't like othe...
Slow and Steady Wins the Race!! U Haul We have moved more times than I can count. Each time, we rent a U-haul truck to get us where we are going. My husband is an expert mover,...
I reserved a 10-foot van from U-HAUL to transport some furniture from a store about 50 miles away: I would pick it up at a U-Haul station near the store and return it to a local station near where I live. In 24 hours I received a phone call from the regional office (in Philadelphia) confirming my reservation and also an email from the marketing company president which spelled out “ONE OF OUR MOVING EXPERTS WILL BE CALLING YOU THE DAY PRIOR TO YOUR MOVE TO SCHEDULE YOUR EXACT PICK-UP LOCATION AND TIME.” This happened FIVE days prior to the pickup date; therefore I anticipated a smooth transaction. Boy! Was I wrong!
On the day prior to the pickup date I waited for the regional office’s call . My phone didn’t ring. So I called them instead. I was told that the regional office would call me later that day, between 5pm-7pm. This was a Friday, so I was slightly concerned. But I waited until my clock struck 6:15pm. I called the regional office again. A woman with a cold voice answered, “someone will give you a call between 8am-9am tomorrow.” But I would need the truck early tomorrow morning in order to do the job I rented it to do, I explained. And I asked her to guarantee a reasonably early pickup time. She wouldn’t give me any guarantee. All she would say is, “there will be a truck tomorrow.” “But how late can that be?”. “Before 8PM.” 8pm! The pickup department of the store closes early on Saturday and does not open on Sunday. I tried to make the woman understand; but she was impenetrable.
After I got off the line with the regional office, it occurred to me that the headquarter might be able to get me a different pickup location. So I called the U-Haul headquarter. After listening to LONG U-Haul ads selling various products, I was connected to a customer representative. After I explained the situation I was transferred to the customer service department. Another long waiting period followed. Then, before I could finish my sentences I was transferred back to the regional office. The same woman answered the phone. I told her I was flexible with my pickup location and asked if she could try again. She threw me the same answer without even looking up her computer: I will have to wait until tomorrow, she made it plain and clear.
Well, U-Haul has good reason to want me to wait until tomorrow - it charges a $50 cancellation fee if a reservation is canceled on the day of pickup. I decided, however, not to step into that trap. Although this was already past 7pm, Friday, and I needed a van on Saturday morning, I took a chance and canceled the U-Haul reservation. The next morning I worked on the phone and was able to find a cargo van from a local rental company for a even better price than I had with U-Haul. Even if I had to pay more, however, I would have been better off than betting my luck on U-Haul’s unreliable service.
U-Haul usually quotes a lower price than other companies such as Budget and Penske. But such saving comes at a price! If you are scheduling an important moving event and running a tight schedule, do NOT count on U-Haul. Because just when you needed it, the truck might not be there!
