Here is my story - tell me what you think:

My daughter moved to St. Louis from Las Cruces, NM last week to go to law school. A month before the move we reserved a truck %26 trailer with U-Haul. The day before, we were contacted by a CSR to tell us where to pick up the truck/trailer. The “nearest” equipment was in Deming, NM - 60 miles east of Las Cruces. After pressuring me to make an on-the-spot decision to take the equipment, the CSR offered a 15% discount on the truck (only) for the inconvenience.

The next day, when she was half way to Deming to get it, my daughter called to get directions. She was then told that they didn’t have the trailer, just the truck! So I called U-Haul and asked what we were supposed to do. We were then told that we could get the trailer in Alamogordo, NM (80 miles north and there is no direct route from Deming so it would be 140 miles to get the trailer after getting the truck and another 80 miles back to load (and about 4 or 5 hours total). I suggested that they check to see if the Alamo store had the truck too (not an idea that came to the CSR) and it did. So my daughter returned back to Las Cruces and then up to Alamo to get the equipment.

While I was working this out, I asked for an additional discount for the inconvenience. I was told that we could get a 20% discount on BOTH the truck and trailer. But the U-Haul in Alamo said that wasn’t in the computer, only a 20% off on the truck rental (this would be an additional 5% over the first offer with much more hassles!).

So I called them back to ask why I couldn’t get what I was promised. The CSR told me that I was going to get the only discount I could get and that the other CSR had made a decision and wouldn’t change that. When I asked for a supervisor, she kept repeating that same statement: “You received all you are going to receive.” I asked if there was a supervisor to talk to and she just kept saying the same thing about the discount. I asked again and then she hung up the phone on me!

I sent a customer service complaint and received an email back saying that nothing could be done until the contract was completed (5 days).

At the end of the five days I received an email saying that my complaint could now be addressed and as such, my complaint was forwarded to a supervisor!

We are now waiting to hear back (but not holding my breath!).
