Uhaul where to begin?
Formulating a fair review about a company with whom you have a negative history is easier said than done. When I reflect on the name Uhaul the thoughts that immediately come to mind are not appropriate for this forum. So I will attempt to give both the positives and the negatives of my experience with this company.
The Good
Let me begin with an overview of the positives Uhaul does in fact have to offer above similar do it yourself moving companies. What drew us to reserve a moving van with this company is plain and simple. Their moving vans stand head and shoulders above the rest. The Uhaul moving van offers a few things which make it more appealing than its competitors.
First and foremost to my knowledge the Uhaul moving van offers the lowest platform available on the market. This allows the do it yourself mover to unload the van with a minimum of difficulty. The platform on the Uhaul moving van sits at about waist level.
Anyone who has moved themselves will agree it is far easier to remove boxes from a truck that doesn’t require a steep ramp to get into and out of the truck while carrying your belongings.
The second feature we found to be a plus on the Uhaul moving van was the attic space provided above the cab of the truck. This feature utilizes some extra much needed space. The other do it yourself moving vans do not provide this feature but rather have a straight box trailer.
The third and final positive we found with the Uhaul moving company was a dramatic difference in price when compared with its competitors.
The Bad
Price and a nice moving van doesn’t amount to a hill of beans if the moving company doesn’t honor your reservation come moving day. We made reservations two full months prior to our move. We were moving from Tucson Arizona to San Antonio Texas nearly 900 miles. We didn’t have the option of time on our hands nor did we have the manpower to wait on loading the truck. When we made our reservations the agent assured us that reservations were taken on a basis of how many trucks were available in a particular area. We planned ahead so felt rest assured that everything was in order when moving day arrived. We learned this was not the case only when we arrived to pick up the truck.
The Ugly
Moving away from all our family and friends was emotionally difficult enough without adding the stress of no moving van. We really had no choice in leaving on schedule as our move was due to a job my husband was scheduled to begin the following week. We managed to secure a truck from Ryder but the extra cost nearly $500.00 was not anticipated and the extra storage space provided in the Uhaul van was space we had counted on. We ended up behind schedule, over our financial budget and had to leave a few items behind. Still knowing the difficulties we had to incur in renting the Ryder van we will do it again should we ever have to move again.
The stress Uhaul put us through with their fickle reservation system really let us down at a time when we were depending on at least that to go well. The Uhaul company made an already difficult process nearly unbearable. As a result this company has lost a valued customer and has earned my "free" advertisement. I will never again trust Uhaul for any of my moving needs nor will my family and friends. I cannot begin to put into words my dissatisfaction with this company.
