A few years back, my husband and I moved from Oregon to Southern California. What a time we had!
We called and rented a Uhaul. First mistake. We ordered a 24 foot. When we went to pick it up it was a 14 foot. Needless to say, we ended up stuffing 24 feet of stuff into a 14 foot uhaul. The guy at uhaul did give us the difference back.
Our trip, was long, very long. A trip that should of taken 16 hours turned into 28 real fast.
We had the uhaul towing a car trailer with my husbands pride and joy on it! His 1969 Plymouth RoadRunner, Lime green with black race strips, Awesome car. Guess what the plates said? "My Girl"! Did it make me mad? No, It was his before he married me. Anyway back to our adventure.
I followed behind him with the two kids and our pet Rat "Ben"! We made it to the Grape vine, if you don’t know what this is, well it is a long hard pull. All up hill for about 20 to 25 mile. We got about 5 miles up and the uhaul, started slowing down. It was awful. We were done to less than 10 mph. This was driving me nuts. I kept wondering why my darling husband was going so slow. He finally pulled over and came back and told me that the uhaul had lost all power and wouldn’t go any further. So we go off the interstate and called Uhaul. It took about two hours for the repair man to show up. He tinkered with it for an hour and told us we should be good to head out. He also said he would follow us to the top of the grape vine. We headed out. The long train of us. Well we made it a couple more miles and it did it agian. Thank God the repair man was with us. Oh, I forgot to mention it was in the middle of the summer in 106 degree weather. We sat along side the interstate in the heat, no air conditioning for another hour. While the repairman worked on the uhaul. I finally told my husband, as the kids were getting so hot, that I would meet him at the top of the hill at the rest area. Well and hour later he showed up at the rest area. The repairman too. He had left only minutes after us. I took him all that time to get up the hill. Then we headed to our destination. When we finally got to where we were going, I check dear Ben. Well he didn’t make it. He had died on the grapevine. I was so upset. We dug a hole and lay poor Ben to rest.
We called uhaul the next morning and told them everything that had happened and they gave us the uhaul for an extra 2 days. Which was nice because we hadn’t even found a place to live yet. So there is my tail of why you don’t want to take a Uhaul up a hill. LOL
