I despise Uhaul. I have used them 5 different times in the last 3 years, moving myself as well as my boyfriend either in town or state to state. Although every experience was terrible, let me highlight some of the worst. Main Tips to remember when you are using a company like this are at a different part of this site, by the members advice about moving in case you are interested in that rather than reading through this whole thing.
I ordered a 14′ truck from the center in Roxbury, MA. Prior experience reminded me that they rarely have the trucks in stock when you actually get there due to overbooking, so I doublechecked that I would recieve that truck when I arrived two weeks later. I was assured by Paul that I would. So two weeks later my friend and I walk into Uhaul to pick up the truck and wait in a line of about 9 people- all waiting for one cashier- who just so happened to be the same Paul. When we finally get through the long line, Paul informs us that although we are there ontime and made a reservation, the truck we reserved was not there. Wonderful. I wish i could say I was surprised. The only ones available were a small van or a 24′ standard truck. Since we had large furniture that would not fit into the small van, we had no choice but to get the 24′ truck despite the fact that we are two small girls and neither of us knew very well how to drive a stick shift. Paul told us it wasnt that hard and said we could bring it back if it we found it too difficult. We were nervous but what were we going to do, we HAD to be out of our apartment that day. So our good friend Paul checked the truck, got the keys, filled out the forms and sent us on our way. My friend was driving and although the truck was stalling a lot we figured it was because of our rustiness at driving a stick. Paul watched us drive around the parking lot once and then waved goodbye. We finally got back to our apartment, parked outside and went in to get the first load.
Well when we got back downstairs, THE TRUCK WAS GONE!! We quickly saw it; it was smashed into the side of the homeless shelter building across the street with police tape all around it and people standing around staring! It was terrible. The truck had rolled across the street, over the sidewalk and into the building. Apparently the parking break had not been applied. We were greeted by a very irate cop. Now I will admit that we should have thought of the parking break before getting out of the truck. But since we did not drive a stick shift, we didnt immediately think of one. And not to mention the fact that THERE WAS NO PARKING BREAK IN THE VEHICLE!! Again, we should have noticed, but i am certain that had it been there we would have thought to use it. The cop was writng us a ticket and informed us that we had to get the truck off of the sidewalk. Problem 1: The truck was unsafe, and neither of us were about to attempt driving it again. Problem 2: When i called Uhaul for help with the situation they told me I had to drive it back to them and would be responsible for the truck since I left with it. I told Paul ( who i should mention is in fact the manager) that I refused to drive the truck- it wasnt safe and i was violating the law. He said too bad and said I could have it towed but id have to pay. He was very very rude to me.
Well the cop started getting angry at Uhaul and was nicer toward us when he realized we had been taken advantage of. It also helped a lot when he sent us to the glove box of the truck for the registration and we discovered THAT WASN’T THERE EITHER!!! This all lasted for about 3 hours. It was humiliating. What ended up happening is the cop got on the phone and told Uhaul to do their job and take care of their customers and get that truck our of there. A tow truck came and took it, the cop tore up our ticket and gave it to Uhaul instead, and I called my credit card company and alerted them so I wouldnt be held responsible. (I still havent gotten my statement so i dont know if i was charged). Unfortunately we had to get out of our apt, so we still needed a truck and it was a little too late to try to find other moving companies. Paul said he had none available but would call around and let us know when he found one. We never heard from him again. We called the other Uhauls in the area, ended up getting the small van and using rope and whatever we could to make everything fit. We were moving until 4 o’clock in the morning. It was a total disaster.

The other terrible experience with UHAUL was during a move from Florida to Boston using a Uhaul trailor. We ended up having a 3 flat tires along the way and in random places where service stations are very scarce. The flats were on the car, but were on the back tires, most likely a result of too much in the trailor although we did not exceed the weight limit indicated on the trailor. We bought the insurance Uhaul offered but it did not cover this. After the second tire on the car was replaced we were up near New York. Well just when we thought everything was getting better, we are driving through huge tunnel/bridge (its either the george washington bridge or its close to it- im not familiar wtih new york) and we hear a strange rattling noise. There is tons of traffic going about 90 m/h and there wasnt room to pull over in there. Well as soon as we are exiting the tunnel (thank god) the back tire on the trailor completely blows (at 70 m/h). Luckily my boyfriend very skillfully controlled the car and pulled it onto the shoulder just in time. Well once again, Uhaul as well as AAA would not help. We ended up getting it fixed- we had to get new york police come and help us lift the whole trailor up to remove it and then figure out how to put it back on once we changed the tire. (Uhaul never told us what to do in case we had to take it off) We made it once again, but it was a scary scary trip.
3) This was another trip from Florida to Boston but this time I was not familiar wtih the Boston area. When we got here, we called the number as indicated and they told us directions to the closest Uhaul center. If you know the Boston area, you know that Saugus is not very easy to get back from without a car, and thats where they sent us. We had no clue, because they said it was close. Well we got so lost on the way and ended up having to pay for so many extra miles, and then when we got there they told us there was no bus or subway even close and that a cab to those stations would cost a fortune. We told them we didnt know the area and asked for a ride to a bus or anything closer to where we lived, and they said nope. Fortunately a woman in the store gave us a ride to the orange line, but we couldve really wasted a lot of money. And now that I live in Boston i know that there are Uhaul centers- tons of them- that are within 5-10 miles of where we moved.
Its really a shame that there are so many Uhauls around because I hate using them. But the truth is- they are in great locations and when you are moving, thats a pretty important factor, especially when you wont have a car to get yourself back to wher you need to go. .
