U-Haul seems to make errors to their clients’ disadvantage, intentionally, in order to gain small extra profits. Customers get absolutely no respect, neither on a professional nor on a personal level. Of all employees I have met, not one of them has proven him/herself trustworthy. There is nothing that could salvage my faith in this company anymore. My objective is to inform others of U-Haul’s shady practices.
On Saturday, February 29th 2004, I pick up a previously online-reserved truck at the Bayshore U-Haul Center, located at 1575 Bayshore Blvd, San Francisco, CA 94124. Renting a 10′ truck one-way from San Francisco to Santa Monica includes 3 days, there is no option to rent for a shorter period. The employee reads aloud and highlights the “relevant” details of the contract before handing me the keys, but she skips the part describing the return date or the number of days the truck is rented for. It was booked and paid for three days ($339 plus insurance and tax) therefore I was under the assumption that the contract would say likewise.
On Tuesday, March 2nd, before 72 hours have fully passed, I arrive at the U-Haul Center of Santa Monica, located at 1747 Lincoln Blvd, Santa Monica, CA 90404, to return the truck. It was there that I was informed of my contract stating a “2-day” rental instead of “3-day”. All my explanations were dismissed as empty excuses since the contract didn’t support my claims. The employee at this branch made me feel like a liar and I ended up paying $57.30 (with insurance) that I didn’t prepare myself for to pay, for one additional day. I was told that the only way I could get this amount back is by somehow proving that the number on the contract was incorrect.
Fortunately, by logging on uhaul.com and by scheduling a faux-rental with the same information, I was able make a print of a 3-day rental summary for $339 plus insurance and tax, proving that the amount I paid was in fact covering three days. So I returned to the U-Haul Center in Santa Monica on March 14th. At last (after the nuisance of taking half a day off work, returning to the branch, and waiting in line) I was reimbursed my $57.30 but didn’t get a “sorry” or any acknowledgement of a mistake made. It felt to me that errors like this are a common ocurrence, only in this case it was detected by me. The employee even insisted that she needed to keep my receipt for their records. The only copier I was allowed to use for my own records was their grainy fax machine.
On May 22th, back in San Francisco, I went to the Bayshore U-Haul Center to inform them of the mistake they made. When I expressed my anger and disappointment to someone who identified himself as the manager, he wrote down my address to send me a $60 gift certificate (toward a future truck rental) as a sign that they would like to keep me as a customer. The point where I lost faith in him (too) was when I asked for his business card for reference. He gave me a business card with another man’s picture on it and seriously expected me to believe it was him! As it turns out, the person on the card, Archie Eusebio, was the real manager, who according to “Elvis Portillo” (the supposed name of the person I was talking to) wasn’t present at that time. This was six months ago but the $60 gift certificate never came.
