You, like me, might be tempted to use Uhaul for renting a truck or a self- unit because you know it’s a long-established company, you see Uhaul trucks all over the place and their prices appear reasonable at first glance. Don’t be fooled however, you’ll end up with many hours of frustration and hidden charges…things you don’t want to deal with on moving day (isn’t moving itself stressful enough?).

First of all, your “reservation” means just about nothing. If you reserve online, you’ll be given a confirmation page that cleverly disguises the fact that your rental is not guaranteed. I reserved a trailer and the confirmation said something like this “The Uhaul center in Stamford, CT is in receipt of your reservation and will call you the day before your rental before 5 pm to tell you the time and location of your pickup.” The day before, no one called me, so I called the regional reservations number, who transferred me to the Stamford location. The Stamford location then informed me that they had no and offered to call me back after looking around the region. The representative called me back fairly quickly and told me that I could pick up a trailer in Bridgeport, CT (about a half hour drive one way). The next morning I showed up in Bridgeport and gave the very nice man working there my reservation. He told me that they don’t even have the size trailer I requested (5 x 10′). He had a bigger trailer but wasn’t normally allowed to let me have it because I was going to be driving to Boston and they didn’t like to let it leave the area (even though I was supposed to return it to the same Bridgeport location). He called a regional manager who gave me permission to take it in light of the fact that they screwed up my reservation. However, the trailer was far bigger than what I needed (even the 5 x 10′ was probably bigger than what I needed) and furthermore I was afraid to drive a 6 x 12′ trailer around a city (it was as big as my Pathfinder).

I left disgusted (see below) and angry at myself that I even considered dealing with Uhaul again after my last experience.

The first experience I had with Uhaul was trying to rent a self- locker that ultimately I decided against. When I went to get a refund, the cashier at the Mass Ave. location in Roxbury, MA charged me a 2nd time instead of refunding my money, and I had to call the location at least 5 times over the next 6 weeks for them to finally credit my credit card. Each time I called, either I couldn’t get through (nobody even picked up) or I had to wait on hold from 3-10 minutes each time.

One of the things that makes me the angriest is that if you reserve online, you are charged a nonrefundable $5 reservation fee. I’m sure they collect that money from hundreds or thousands of people whose reservations they then proceed to screw up.
