Evil, Rotten, Stinking U Haul U Haul

Uhaul is a rip off!! U Haul I made my reservation online, and proceeded to wait for my call... Well, not only did these people NOT call me, they were RUDE and HOSTILE ...

U HAUL therefore U DIE! This should be this EVIL company’s motto! U Haul Made a reservation for an in-town move (about 30 miles) online after calling them and being assured that the truck will be available on time...

There are few companies I hate more than U Haul. Granted, I was raised to detest this purveyor of dilapidated trucks and –but over the years, circumstances sometimes left me with U Haul as the only option.

My first bad experience, though I don’t remember it, happened when I was all of six months old. My parents, young and struggling, left home for a new home in Wisconsin with a rickety U Haul trailer filled with all their possessions. The connection snapped, the trailer went flying, and everything they owned was lost. That set the tone for our family with U Haul.

We’ll skip another half dozen stories about dead batteries, rude workers, and reserved trucks not being available. . . they’ll apparently universal U Haul policy. Our last experience finally did the trick–we will never use this dreadful company again.

The sordid tale:

My husband had to do a double move up to our new home–he had to schlep his things from the Bronx, and he had to schlep his late mother’s things from the Poconos. Enter his cousin, Michael, who insisted on helping, and convinced him to rent a U Haul. My protests went unheeded.

When they picked up the U Haul, it was clearly struggling. They took it back to the , and were told it was the only large truck available. So, off they went. During the day (icy rainy February) the truck died 37 times. They were stopped by the police. They received all sorts of one finger salutes from all those friendly New Yorkers.

Whenever the truck died near a pay phone, they called U Haul. U Haul put them on hold a lot. They waited 2 hours for the repair guy to show up–and he told them he couldn’t fix the truck. He did, however, push them for a while with his truck.

24 hours later, they arrived at our new home. (The whole trip should’ve been about 10 hours, tops.) The truck shivered, belched, and truly died in our driveway. I called U Haul to have it hauled away.

They told me it was my problem.

I shrieked and hollered that the guys had made dozens of calls for help, and that U Haul had done nothing useful. Finally, they decided to give me a $50 credit towards my next U Haul rental (as if I’d use them again) and they credited the overtime charges by 50%. That’s right–we had to pay extra for the extra hours cajoling the dying truck.

However, the charges were still accruing because we still had the truck. I told them we’d be happy to bring it back, if it ran. Sorry, they said. This went on for a week–until finally they agreed to come get the truck. Told me to leave the keys in the truck (heh!) and they’d be there in a few hours.

A week later, the truck was still there. Our condo association was less than thrilled with us. We hated seeing that truck every time we walked outside. Talk about rubbing it in. . .

Finally, I decided to be naughty. I called U Haul, faked an accent, and cried that "Beeg truck ees block my house for 3 weeks. Please to come and take." The clerk asked if I thought the truck was stolen. "Oh yes" I replied.

We woke up the next morning and the truck was gone. Since we never got another bill, we can only assume the U Haul people took it–not that they wanted it. It’s a simple lesson–don’t do business with a company that values neither its assets or its customers.
