When my short lived experience with U-Haul began I called 4 weeks ahead to make sure a vehicle would be available and secured it with my credit card … or rather … attempted to. Their credit card reader could not handle my 2001 expiration date. That problem was short lived - and probably not U-Haul’s problem. They took my number and called back in two days when the new reader arrived (the problem was known before I called). Van secured. $19.95 for in town traffic. Any hidden fees? "Nope, nothing. Mileage of course, but that is just a few cents a mile." So great … I’m moving 7 miles. 2 trips. The trip to and from U-Haul. Couldn’t be more then 50 miles total. And "a few cents a mile" isn’t so bad. I’ll budget $15 dollars for that. So let’s say $40 dollars after tax - $50 just to be safe.
Come moving day I was in for a surprise.
When I arrived at U-Haul there was no one in the lobby. Couldn’t see anyone outside. Walked into the garage … nothing. I rang the bell, open the door a few times (rang a louder bell), yelled once. Finally I walked to a pay phone and called. Finally someone is there - never did figure out where they were.
So I fork over the credit card for the van and they tell me to go to the garage to "get truck 102903" (whatever number it was - I don’t recall). Still no one in the garage. Back to the lobby … no one there.
I finally find someone who can point me to my truck - too bad its on the rack with its tires off.
So they give me a new truck. This one is in the lot but I’ll have to wait for Jimbo to take me out to it. Unfortunately Jimbo is busy right now.
I’m a good hour into this visit now.
Jimbo finally gets done with whatever Jimbo does and unlocks the van for me.
"Ever run a diesel?"
"Nope."
"Oh - well its easy, you’ll figure it out."
Thanks Jimbo. The van started - reluctantly.
Off I go. The rest of the trip was almost good. The dolly I paid for was not in the truck. I blankets I had requested smelt awful and the bungee cords were mostly broken or so stretched out they were worthless.
The move went OK - the truck didn’t drive that great but it was big enough to move my sofa so I didn’t complain much.
Back at U-Haul they were apparently flipping a coin to see what my mileage would cost. When I got back the whole deal cost me over 70 dollars and I only put 33 miles on the vehicle. I put diesel back in (surprisingly good mileage - only $0.98 … though I didn’t squeeze the pump twice 
before I came back - these other charges still baffle me. The "few cents a mile" must have been closer to a buck a mile.
In the end I paid too much, got horrible service, was unhappy with the truck and resolved never to use them again.
In fact when I last moved I used a family member’s trailer and did the whole thing for free. It took a few more trips but I was far happier with the result and didn’t have to fork over any cash.
I’d avoid U-Haul. I’d avoid it like the plague.
