We rented a U-Haul for our recent move in Baltimore, MD. We called around. There was one U-Haul place right near us (Golden Ring). It was HUGE. We called and they said they were all booked up for that day. He referred us to a U-Haul rental place down the street in Hooker land (On moving day we drove by the first location and there must have been a minimum of 80 trucks on the lot the whole day. Booked up my a$$.
Anyway this was on a Sunday. All week the place opens at 7 EXCEPT Sundays when it opens at 9am. We got there around 8:50am and there were some people waiting. We walked up and stood in line. Keep in mind that this is a really run down part of town and johns have been known to take hookers to the lot of this place to do business. We waited and waited and waited. We kept seeing people walk around inside. We kept waiting. 9:02 rolls around and so does a big far lady who pulls up and starts literally cleaning the Ho Ho wrappers and Pepsi bottles out of her car. My boyfriend recognized her as the Manager (he stopped by earlier to confirm his reservation). We waited and waited and waited. She was done cleaning her car and went in. Around 9:17 they finally open the doors.
So we were still waiting in line and another big woman brushes past me and says “SCUSE ME” and goes to the front of the line, or at least tries to. I had thought she was with the guy being served, but she was a butinsky. Luckily (one thing I can say good about this place) is that they recognized us as being next and waited on us before her. We finally got the truck and off we went.
About 15 minutes into our ride (as we reached our Move-From location) the CHECK ENGINE light comes on. The truck seemed otherwise OK. We didn’t know what to do. The place we rented from had no more trucks…the lease had 2 days left…we went ahead and loaded it up and drove the 25 minutes to our MOVE TO location. The CHECK ENGINE light came on again but we made it. We proceeded to unload and made the hellacious trip back down, wondering if the thing would just die on Interstate 95.
One thing to note is that while unloading someone ran into and scuffed the truck in our parking lot. The sad thing was that the truck as so banged up already, we could not tell where they hit it!!
When we got back to the place, we tried to warn them of the problem when we were “checking the truck back in”. The guy, almost PROUDLY, states “Well we’re not going to ground this truck (i.e. take it off the road)”. He said that a few times. He did say someone would probably look at it and that it was listed as being due for service. Fine, whatever, give me my deposit back and let me get the %26*@%26* out of here!
U-Haul is available all over and has fairly cheap rates but BE CAREFUL. I have heard from others that they do not maintain their fleet very well. It’s a shame because Mom’s Attic held our big queen size sofa bed.
