Every experience I have ever had with U-Haul has been an illustration on how NOT to do business…how NOT to provide (any) customer service…how NOT to manage your inventory.

After my own personal experience, observation and then hearing similar stories the conclusions I have come to about U-Haul are that:

U-Haul will agree to anything you want on the telephone until they get your credit card number. Case in point I called to reserve a truck for two days over the weekend. When I picked up the reserved truck I was told they only rented trucks for one day on the weekend. (By the way this is why there are never enough trucks for customers who have made reservations.)

U-Haul is not adequately staffed with people, they have insufficient working inventory (trucks) and their accounting system is slow and out of date. When I arrived to pick up the truck I had to wait in line for over 2 hours with a number of other customers. When I was finally waited on and was told that they only rented trucks for one day over the weekend (see first comment). I was then only allowed 22 hours for a daily rental rather than 24 because they tried to record that I picked up the truck based on my reservation (two-hours previously) and not the time I was able to take possession of the truck.

(To give some credit most employees did seem to be trying. I can’t imagine that U-Haul would be a very good place to work — incompetent managers, ludicrous policies, antiquated business systems and of course very upset and angry customers.)

To continue my story, I was then handed the keys and waived out to the parking lot to find my truck! What a joke. I had to hunt down an employee to show me where to find the truck number on my reservation form and then find a truck that had a corresponding number. No employee walked through the checklist at the truck — you know where they check mileage, gas level, etc. I subsequently found that there was no seatbelt on the passenger side so I couldn’t have someone ride with me and when I did return the truck I found that the mileage had been misread.

Needless to say, I do not ever anticipate using U-Haul’s services again.
