You read that correctly - both I as well as my girlfriend are lucky to be alive due to the incredible incompetence of U-Haul. We rented a large U-Haul truck to help with our move from one neighborhood to another - not even three miles between them and even though the truck was extremely old, filthy, and difficult to steer, we completed the majority of the move without an issue.

It was after we decided to haul away some of the boxes that we no longer needed that we ran into trouble. By this time, it was approximately 9 or 10 at night and we were driving right through downtown Atlanta - not exactly the Ritz if you know what I mean. After resting at a stoplight for a minute or two, I lightly pushed the gas and we began to take off. The truck got up to about 30mph and then I realized that the gas no longer worked and seconds later, the steering failed as well. Naturally, I slammed on the brakes and thank god they actually functioned. With a cranky girlfriend (we spent the entire day moving a house full of furniture) and a truck on its last legs, I gave it about 15 minutes before turning the key while praying for it to start working. No such luck.

I called the 1-800 number and explained the problem to what must have been a teenager (on drugs?) who was absolutely clueless and provided zero help. I finally got a manager who said a tow truck would be on the way. I explained that it was going on 11pm and we were stuck outside in downtown Atlanta, but I was assured the tow truck would be there in 30 minutes. So, we locked ourselves in the truck and waited.

And then waited some more. And more. Over an hour and a half passed and no tow truck in sight. I called U-Haul again and was told that it was on its way. Another hour goes by and it’s now pushing 2:30 am or so. At this point we were furious, but U-Haul did nothing other than insist that the tow truck was on the way, so that sent me into an absolute rage. I told U-Haul that their gross incompetence and our endangerment is a crime that I’d be speaking to my lawyer about, but this had absolutely no effect whatsoever.

Finally at around 3:30 or 4 in the morning, while my girlfriend slept in the truck, I managed to flag down a cab and after shelling out another $40, we eventually made it back home…in one piece.

The next day, I was still completely livid, but we drove up to the U-Haul store to return the key to the truck. After I explained the nightmare to the person (drugs?) at the front desk, I was given a blank stare and was told that they would begin to charge me a daily “abandonment fee” until the truck was returned to the location. As soon as I heard that, I almost had a stroke and if it wasn’t for my girlfriend being there with me, I would have wrung that woman’s neck. I threw the key at her and told her that it was her problem and then vowed to get even.

I spent the next couple MONTHS making phone calls and writing letters to U-Haul’s corporate office and somehow managed to get reimbursed for all of my expenses. True, we did suffer unimaginable duress, but I was so incredibly tired of dealing with U-Haul that I did not pursue any legal action.

I am absolutely begging you, please do not give this company a dime of your money. They are poorly ran to say the least, do not give a damn about your well-being, and may even put your life in danger.
