In reading through many of the reviews on U-Haul I have seen many horror stories, and although I do not doubt that they are totally true, I feel that I must share my experience with U-Haul because overall I was pleased and had few problems.
My husband and I rented a U-Haul from Ft Worth, Texas for our move to West Texas, out near Odessa/Midland. A five and a half hour drive in a regular car, so a little bit longer in a big U-Haul. We rented the second largest truck because I felt like it would be just right for our stuff. My husband thought maybe we should go ahead and pay a little bit extra for the largest truck, but in the end I won that argument.
The day we picked up our U-Haul went smoothly. The truck was ready to go when we arrived for it. I guess coming from a big city that could be expected. There was an entire parking lot full of trucks so we even had a selection. We spent the day loading our belongings and quickly realized that I had been wrong about the truck size (yes, I can admit that now) and after fully loading the truck my husband had to drive it back over to the U-Haul place and rent a small enclosed trailer to hook up to the back. Okay so he was right. There, I said it and I hope he knows I have admitted it to millions of strangers.
Again, the trip over and pick-up of our little trailer went smoothly, no problems and they even hooked it up for us. There were very nice people working at this location as well, and they seemed helpful and answered a couple of questions that I had. We had to buy a lock for the trailer we rented as well, and the first one they sold to us did not fit it correctly, so they happily exchanged it for the right size.
Along the way to the other side of the state the air conditioner in the U-Haul truck stopped blowing cold air, so my husband had to spend the rest of the trip with the window down (thankfully I got to follow in our car) but other than that we had no problems with the truck itself. I would have much rather the air died than the whole truck, you know?
We moved to our new home on a Saturday, so we had to keep the truck and trailer until Monday morning when our local U-Haul place was open. Dropping off the truck was just as easy as picking it up had been, again, no problems or hassles. We told them about the air but they did not give us any kind of discount. I suppose it would have been a nice thing to do, but since we didn’t have to pay for the move we did not complain.
Overall I had no major problems with U-Haul and when the time comes to move again I don’t doubt that we will use U-Haul again. Until we have a horrible experience with them, I see no reason to change.
