I have read so many bad reviews about U-haul and it had been years since I had rented one. We have been making a move for the last two weeks and needed a truck for two days the only local trucks available were U-Haul.

I went to the local dealer and was going to reserve the truck but they don’t reserve for local service so I had to wait until the day I wanted the truck to go there again.

When I got to the dealer he has many trucks of varying sizes on the lot and I told how much furniture I was moving and he suggested the 17 foot truck. I said yes and rented an appliance dolly while I was there to go with the truck. The dolly was only 10.00 a day a lot cheaper then renting from a rental place.

I didn’t have to pay a deposit and he filled out all the information which took about 10 minutes mostly because we were talking about the bad reputation that U-Haul has. I gave him my credit card and he told me the price per day. I believe it was 29.99 plus 69 cents a mile since it was going to be on a weekend. I got the keys and was on my way.

The Truck

This was a seventeen footer and had an automatic transmission. The inside was very clean and had a radio and AC {I was glad for this, the temp outside was 92}. The outside mirrors were the large ones you see on all trucks and there was a smaller mirror supposed to help with the blind spot behind you, it did. Adjusting the mirrors manually took a minute or so and I pulled out on the highway.

The fuel gauge read 1/2 tank and you have to return the truck with the same amt of gas that was in it when you left. The truck was as easy to drive as my van it had power steering I was thankful for this. I took it home and we started loading up furniture and appliances as soon as hubby got home.

Inside the back of the van was a level above the floor that said Grannies shelf. We used this to put drawers and small boxes on as the sign says not to overload this area.

The truck held all the appliances and the beds and numerous boxes. We did have to make another trip to get the rest of the big things, but all in all it was not a problem driving the truck.

The door has a safety latch on the back and if you want to lock it where noone can get in you have to use your own padlock. I thought this was somehow remiss as the lock should have come with the truck.

We drove 50 miles or so and only had to use 5.00 of gas to bring it back to the half tank mark. I thought that was very good gas mileage. I was expecting to pay a lot more for gas the way it has gone up.

I swept out the van when we finished and my husband drove it back to the dealer. We put the dolly in the front seat and locked the doors, the dealer was closed and I didn’t want to buy a lock for the back latch to keep someone from stealing the dolly. We put the keys into a drop box.

The final total for our move with the truck was 104.00 and that included insurance. Not to bad a deal I thought. I would rent U-Haul again if I had too, but I have made up my mind if I move again we will hire a mover.
