For some reason the moving business is dirty. When you rent a car a smiling, cheerful individual greets you at the counter and clearly tells you all the options available. But renting a moving truck is completely the opposite (from my experience). First and foremost, never have I encountered a clean U-Haul office. Many of them are located in obscure locations where care is not taken to make sure the windows are clean, the carpet vacuumed, nor the counters…well…touchable. At U-Haul, you don’t get smiles, you just get the facts. How much it’s gonna cost. How much your deposit is gonna cost. How much the dolly or blankets are gonna cost. Swipe the card. Here’s your key!
Sadly renting a U-Haul is not similar to buying a car. You can’t test drive it beforehand. Moving companies probably know this would be a stupid idea, since most of their trucks seem to be on their last legs just barely hanging on to those safety regulations. Most brakes are so worn down that they emit a loud squealing noise and only stop after the truck shudders and shakes.
Before you embark on going down to your local U-Haul station, it’s best to start online. Most moving companies offer discounts if you use their online reservation system. If the actual site, U-Haul, isn’t offering any discounts, then check out moving web sites like Move.com. Normally they have some sort of a partnership deal with a moving company that can save you around 10% of your cost. U-Haul’s online web site not only allows you to actually make a reservation, but you can view each size of vehicle they have and how much it can carry, making it easy to know which you should rent.
Also, before actually renting a truck, you need to do a little math. Although I didn’t encounter this, moving to certain locations can greatly increase your cost. For example: moving out of the San Francisco Bay Area can cost quite a bundle, because demand is up, for moving trucks. Moving into the Bay Area however is cheaper, since they need trucks, so therefore they offer discounted rates. If your move isn’t too far away (I’d say within 150 miles) you might want to get out your calculator and see if it’s actually cheaper to rent your truck at your destination, then drive it back empty to pick up your stuff, then drive it back to your destination. The cost of gas and mileage may be cheaper, then renting the truck in the expensive location.
Probably the hardest part about renting a U-Haul is driving and/or parking the unit. But that’s to be expected from any moving truck. They are big and bulky with plenty of blind spots. They don’t accelerate quickly and braking takes some time. It’s best to move with help since they can help you change lanes and when parking make sure you don’t hit anything else.
I’m a U-Haul survivor, but I think the next time around I’m going to go in search of a different moving company. There has to be someone else out there that is cleaner and keeps their trucks in better working order.
