My family and I were moving from Wisconsin to Arizona. I had went on line and checked out truck rentals, and it was either U Haul or Ryder. I picked U Haul because they had more room for cargo in their 26 foot truck.
I made a reservation on line for June 23 using my credit card. I expected a call a week or so before the move. I never got one, so I calle the office and asked them when I would get to talk to someone about my reservation pick up time. The woman at the office said someone would contact me on June 22 before 5 pm.
So I got the call, they told me they were having trouble locating the truck that I wanted. They said they would call tomorrow morning. So I get a call from them about 8 am the next day. The woman at the regional office said all she could get was a 24 foot truck. I asked why she couldn’t get the 26 foot truck, and her only answer was they are hard to find.
So I guess an online reservation with a confirmation number means absolutely nothing to U Haul. So I made a reservation over a month in advance that meant nothing.
Well at this point I had a house full of boxes that had to be packed up in a truck by early the next morning, so I had to take the 24 foot truck. I was not happy about this. But at this point it would be difficult to find another company.
When I get to the office I find out I need an extra $100 deposit I was not told about in addition to the $2317 for the truck. The truck was also only half full of gasoline. So I paid over $2000 for a truck with a half a tank of gas. The woman at the office told me I would need to return the truck with 1/2 a tank of gas in order to avoid a fee.
Well we loaded the truck and ended up having to leave behind several of our belongings we would have liked to bring with us. If we had the 26 foot truck I think we would have had enough room.
The truck was fine until we hit the mountains in New Mexico and Arizona, and the truck could only climb hills at 25 mph. It was also a gas hog as I had expected. The brake light on the right side only worked when it wanted to.
We finally got to our destination 3 days later and spent most of the day unloading. I tried to call the office to see what time they closed. The guy who answered the phone immediately asked for a name and number, and said he would call me back. Almost an hour went by, and still no phone call. I tried to call him back, the line was busy. So I called the regional office for Arizona. The woman at the office told me the drop off location closed at 6 pm. Well it was after 5:30 pm so I had to hurry.
I got to the office at 5:55 pm. They had already locked the doors. I pounded on the door and they opened up and told me to park the truck in the back of the building. I did that and they asked me for the keys. I told them I needed my deposit back. The “manager” said it would have to wait until tomorrow when the computers were working. So I said I would be back tomorrow.
So I had to go out of my way to get my deposit back. I did get it back, but I wasted part of my day in the process. If I had to do it all over again I would not have gone with U Haul. Take my advice, spend the little bit of extra cash and go with someone else.
