Over the past weekend, I moved myself and my three children from a two-bedroom apartment into a house we just purchased last month.
I had every intention of doing this move without any professional help at all. My cousin lives a few hours away and volunteered to bring a truck and trailer. The morning he drove down to help me, he arrived in a compact car–his truck had broken down the night before.
Having no choice but to complete my move that day, we headed out to the local U-haul rental to see if they had a truck available. They had three. I chose the 16-foot box truck and prepared to pay the $39.95 quoted rental with 49 cents per mile which would be owed upon return of the vehicle. The young teenager renting the truck to me punched all the info into his electronic device and said, "That will be $85.96." I said, "You said $39.95–that is a huge difference." He looked confused and called his boss at home. Turned out he was punching the time of return into the computer incorrectly and I was being charged for two days. He fixed the problem and gave me my paperwork and began waiting on the next customer in line. Still having no keys, I waited for him to complete the transaction and asked him if I could please have the keys for the moving truck I had just rented. He finally found them, and we were on our way.
My cousin drove the truck because there was NO WAY I was going to drive something that big. When we got to the apartment complex, he said turning had been a challenge. I was glad it wasn’t me, as I would probably have taken out a few cars on my way!
We began loading the truck and four hours later were on our way down the street to my new house (approximately 4 blocks away.) Upon arrival, my cousin backed the truck up to my front door, pulled the ramp out onto the front porch and we began unloading and carrying everything directly into the front door off the truck. The ramp was very sturdy and easy to use and we were able to unload in one hour what it had taken us four hours to load. (I lived in an upstairs apartment, and navigating the stairwell and then having to walk with each box out into the parking lot to load the truck was very time-consuming–never again!)
While returning the truck, we noticed that it was shimmying very badly. I’m not sure I would have been comfortable taking this truck on a long-distance move, as it seemed like it just might break down at any time. We mentioned this to the clerk when turning the keys in, and she didn’t seem concerned or as if she was going to do anything about it until the truck actually broke down.
It took longer than it should have to turn the truck back in as well. The young teen who had rented the truck to me had not charged me a deposit as he should have and that confused her. She did ask for the return mileage and charged me for that. We had only driven it about 12 miles, so it added about $6.00 to the rental price–not bad for the convenience of only having to make one load/trip.
Overall, I would recommend U-haul for a LOCAL move. I do not think I would have trusted this truck for anything further than that.
I also would caution any one that driving a large truck like this is much different than driving a small passenger vehicle. Give yourself extra room and time for braking. Go slower than you think you need to, and keep safety foremost in your mind.
