U-Haul dropped the ball, and I’m still trying to settle-in almost 2 months after my move date. Please read on, and heed the warning of this horrific experience and tale of massive incompetence.
I recently moved about 15 miles and about 4 days before my move date I made a reservation with U-Haul for a 14-foot truck. I chose U-Haul because I had used them years before and it was all simple enough then, as I thought it would be with this move. I’m single and an apartment dweller, so my belongings were limited to boxes, a bed, a table and a dresser. Simple, right? Not when I arrived at 10 AM on Sunday to pick up my truck.
There was one 14-foot truck and I was the 5th customer, soon to be disgruntled, vying for its use. The manager of the store had overbooked. I was told that people were not returning the trucks on time, and to come back at noon. We left the new phone number, the old, and a mobile phone number of a friend who was helping me move. All had voice mail, though none were used by U-Haul reps.
We all had to be in work Monday morning, so we began to move smaller items in our personal cars, craning and stretching to pack everything in "Hollywood Hillbillies-Style."
We made 4 trips using a car and a Toyota truck, and each time we drove by the U-Haul to see if there was a truck, van, heck–a hand truck!–for us to use. No Go, folks. We stuck it out, finally giving up around 9 PM. I finished moving most of my belongings the following weeks in the evenings after work. I have yet to move my bed, which is too large for the vehicle I have.
About ten days after my move date, my bank account bounced a check for a mere $36. I found out that the debit/credit card number I had given to reserve my would-be moving truck had been tagged for $120! I had never been told that any money would actually be TAKEN, I thought it was a security measure. I was charged $25 by my bank for the overdraft, and had to physically go to the U-Haul location to request they issue a credit to my card.
In the end, it cost a good deal more in gas, discomfort, time and bank fees than the misleading low price splashed across their trucks and vans.
Had I not bounced a check, my $120 could easily have remained in the U-Haul till, and I would have been charged for the "privilege" of having been grossly inconvenienced by a company that can’s seem to count.
