Anywhere I Need To Go… U Haul On a few occasions now, I have had the chance to rent a piece of equipment from U-Haul. Most recently, we rented a large moving truck when ...

Over a year ago we (my family and I) moved apartments. Being a european I decided to go with a company I was familiar with, Hertz. They were hard to find and less than helpful. Next I tried Budget who promised the world, they just could not say no, but when I came from the truck I was informed that my reservation was deleted, that they didn’t have to give me warning and they reserved the right to refuse custom at any time for whatever reason (Later I found out that they took exception to my Scottish accent, and assumed since I was Scottish, I must be a drunkard.)

Being told by the land lady that we had run out of time and were about to be turfed off the very next morning I panicked and went to the nearest rental place which happened to be Lakewood U-Haul. They didn’t have anything there on the lot they could give me at such short notice but they called up nearby centres and dealers searching for a truck. At last they found a truck over in Parkland.

“Parkland? Where is that?!?” Cried yours truely, the bonafide foreigner. They supplied me with a map and directions straight to their Parkland branch.

I arrived there and the only truck they had left was a 24 foot truck. Overwhelmed as I was, I was grateful afterwards since I didn’t realise how much space a three bedroom apartment’s worth of stuff took up.

They had told me that I had to take the vehicle one way locally since it was a one-way designated truck and not part of their local inventory. I was thinking about other things like where we were going to keep our stuff for the night.

Having coming back to them asking for an extension to what I thought was a local rental, they reminded me that it was a one-way rental, but they were going to work with me. They gave me one months free and allowed me to return it to their location. I was kind of hoping that I didn’t use that much gas, so I didn’t replace what gas I used, but I was 1/8 of a tank short (For a 50 gallon tank, that’s quite a lot short). They explained to me the policy for returning vehicles short on gas, which was $20 service charge and $2 per gallon (which pretty soon is going to be a bargain the way gas-prices are shooting up.) The reason given for this is to dissuade customers from running an entire tank dry so that the next customer couldn’t get off the lot for lack of fuel. They advised me that filling it up to the point that I had left with would be a lot cheaper. I did so and saved a lot.

Something I did notice when I was their was that when things got really busy (customers picking up, dropping off, reserving, buying materials, looking for propane and ) that an efficient sheen sort of overcame them and there was no time for social conversation etc . . . I did kind of feel like I was only in their way, an obstruction in a well oiled renting machine.

On the whole the crew that dealt with me were very professional, the price (Rental, mileage, CDW and tax) was more agreeable than Penske or Hertz at the time for a similar truck.

Now here comes the irony.

One month later I applied for a job at the Parkland U-Haul store as a Customer Service Rep (The guys behind the counter) and they hired me based on my people skills and not on national prejudice. Since then I’ve been transferred to the Lakewood U-Haul which is a lot closer to home and I hope I can offer the same quality of service as I have received, perhaps with a friendlier service.
