After reading all of the negative reviews of U-Haul on Epinions, I was terrified to rent from them. Luckily, my experience wasn’t like others that have rented and written an Epinion on them.

I checked on the cost of renting a truck and a car trailer, versus renting a trailer and using my car to tow it. The quoted cost of the truck and the car trailer was approximately $800. The quoted cost of renting the trailer was approximately $200.

I decided to try to save money by renting a trailer. Although I did save money, there were several hidden costs that lessened my perceived savings.

Many people are under the impression that you can rent a hitch from U-Haul to tow a trailer. While this may be true, the cost of renting a hitch is about $50. The cost of buying a hitch is $100, depending on your car. The cost of wiring is another $15. The cost of installing the wiring and the hitch was $35. So to tow a trailer you can count on an initial cost of $150. The good news is that this equipment is yours, and you can tow again without having to pay for it.

When I went to pick up the trailer, I was hit with the remaining "hidden" costs. The first was a $20 deposit. Not that big a deal, as long as you get it back. The second hidden cost is $25 "insurance". The insurance policy doesn’t really state that it covers anything, but the U-Haul rep will tell you that it covers damages to the trailer, and all your contents in an accident, regardless of fault.

The other "hidden" cost that you must consider when renting from U-Haul is the cost of fuel. With a car, you can count on a considerable decrease in fuel economy due to extra weight and being less aerodynamic.

I’m sure the fuel costs renting a truck are much worse, however.

My trip was uneventful. The trailer towed just fine, and I arrived at my destination safely. Once I returned the trailer, I received me deposit back. No hassles or anything…probably because I paid the $25 "insurance".

What was initially a $200 rental turned into a $375 rental. Fortunately, I rented a trailer. More expensive than what I was quoted, but still cheaper than a truck.

My experience with U-Haul was not bad compared to some of the other reviews. I would just advise people to be sure to ask what all the costs are when comparing moving services.
