Over the last 5 years, I’ve used U-Haul three times. It seems that the more money I pay them, the worse they get. To be honest, I’ve used U-Haul three times because they were the cheapest. Let’s just say you get what you pay for. The first time I rented from them was an in-town, one day truck rental and everything went fine. The second time, I rented a trailer and while the equipment was older than I would’ve like, it got me there. The third and final time was a monumental nightmare. I can now say that in the future, if I can’t afford a real truck rental company, then I just won’t move at all.
Last year, we moved from Florida to Alberta, Canada, a major move of over 3000 miles. When I called to book the 17 foot truck and tow dolly for our car, I was given very confusing information about pick-up times, destinations and deposits. I had to call several different places before everything was confirmed. Stupid me, I should’ve known this was a bad start. I was also assured I’d be given newer equipment for such a long move.
On the day of the move, it was, as usual, over 80 degrees in Florida. We picked up the moving truck and after hours of hard, physical labour in the heat, we loaded up the truck. As we drove back to the U-Haul to pick up our tow dolly, we noticed an extremely strong fuel smell coming from the front. It was overwhelming and the short drive back to U-Haul was making me ill, I certainly couldn’t have spent 7 days in that truck.
When we got to the U-Haul dealership, we immediately brought this to the manager’s attention. He tried to tell us this is normal and that he couldn’t do anything about it. We argued back and forth, called the head office and waited several hours to talk to someone at the head office. My husband felt it was dangerous to drive the truck. After hours of arguing and pleading, the head office finally agreed to bring us another truck. By this time, we were 5 hours behind schedule. Not only that, but we had to call our friends to come back and help us transfer all our stuff over to the 2nd truck in the Florida heat. No offer of any assistance whatsoever from U-Haul.
After another 2 hours, we were ready to hook up the tow dolly and our car. The tow dolly turned out to be a complete piece of junk, older than the hills, with both lights completely missing. Not just broken, but actually missing. Correct me if I’m wrong, but it is illegal to tow without lights. By this time, we were so sick of everything and really anxious to leave, so we spent our own money to buy lights to attach to the car.
The second truck was newer, but there was a leak in the back corner. Luckily, we didn’t hit any major storms, otherwise, our stuff would have been soaked.
Smooth sailing now, but when we got to Indiana, one of the tires on the piece of junk tow dolly blew. Luckily, we were near a town and we called the 1-800 service number. After 23 minutes of being on hold, we talked to someone and arranged to get the tire fixed. This time, we were set back another 4 hours.
In Saskatchewan, on a particularly narrow stretch of the trans Canada highway, another tire blew on the old piece of junk tow dolly. It was almost midnight and because the road was rocky, we didn’t notice until a trucker caught up to us to tell us that sparks were shooting from the tow dolly. We immediately stopped on the narrow road on a slight incline, detached the piece of junk from our car and we drove back to the town we had just passed.
We left the tow dolly on the road, we had no choice, we couldn’t keep driving it. When we reached the town of Moosomin, we dutifully found a phone and called U-Haul even though we were exhausted. Not only was U-Haul not sympathetic, they threatened to sue us for leaving the tow dolly on the road. What a nightmare, we weren’t even all that stressed out until we talked to them! The next day, we called U-Haul Canada and they were much nicer, but we were still stuck with fixing that piece of junk tow dolly for the rest of our trip.
In the end, we did make it to Alberta, but it was no thanks to U-Haul. The tow dolly wrecked our car alignment, it has never been the same since. We thought of complaining to U-Haul, but realized it was futile and we just didn’t have any fight left in us. All in all, it was very shortsighted of U-Haul to give us such old, bad equipment. The two blown tires on that crooked tow dolly and emergency stops probably cost them more than their profit on our move. Needless to say, we will never ever use U-Haul again and we tell this story to lots of potential customers.
