“Just let me call Rob…” U Haul

U Haul Disaster U Haul After reserving a trailer well in advance of a family move, for a 7 a.m. start, U-Haul did not call to provide the pick-up point. The local...

What course of action can Uhaul take against you if they claim that you owe them money? If Uhaul claims that you owe them money, and you disagree, what can they do ... besides "send it to collections"? Can they call the police...

I’ll start with the positive… if you want to find a UHaul center, there’s one in almost every town and it takes no time at all to track down your local dealer.

If you find yourself in need of boxes, bubble wrap, tape, gloves, rope… everything is available for purchase in their centers and the costs are usually competitive with local shops. For bigger moving needs, such as hand trucks, they offer a rental service at very reasonable costs.

So they can handle your “moving accessories” and they’re easy to find. Now let’s deal with the flip side of the UHaul coin.

Where do they find their employees… the nursing homes? These people move like molasses. They check forms, recheck forms, call Rob in some other area, check the papers again, make another call, ring up half your order, then walk out back to find Rob… who appears 30 minutes later only to tell you that’s it’s the last truck and the guy who JUST now brought it back messed up a few things but it still drives fine. At this point your papers will be reviewed, Rob will run outside and push the truck into the showcase spot, and suddenly you find yourself being processed out like lightening. It becomes frightening, like you’re being set up for something.

Then you hit the road and you find out what the setup was. It’s like the UHaul lottery… what part of your driving experience will be effected by their lack of maintenance? For us it was the blinker that didn’t work and the that slipped out of gear. Thank goodness it was an in town move, I would have hated being on the road and having to deal with that thing! As it was we took it back in after the first load, only to be told that it was fine. My husband insisted we were not fine since we had to climb a hill to the new house and having a big loaded down truck suddenly slip into neutral wasn’t cutting it for us. Rob came out (good old Rob) and poured a pint of fluid in it and slammed the lid. We were “good to go” according to Rob.

Halfway up the hill it slipped out of gear and we scrambled to maintain control. This time when we went back to UHaul, we were met at the door by… guess who… that’s right, good old Rob holding another quart of fluid. He thought he might not have put enough in the first time and that we might be back! I thought my husband was going to strangle him! We again asked for another truck, but were told that every single one was out (apparently UHaul centers own but 1 truck… the ones out front are only displays so don’t bother hoping).

By the end of the day we were twice as tired as we needed to be just because we had dealt with UHaul every trip. We exceeded our rental time by 4 hours, but my husband didn’t give them a choice in not charging us for it since we had wasted so much time in their shop.

As a final note on this story… we watched Rob pull the truck around to the showcase spot and prep it for the next guy who was standing behind us in line. He expressed concern for the truck after hearing my husband go off on the manager… he was told that it was the last truck anywhere around and that they had fixed the problem since we returned it (all of 5 minutes). I felt for the guy, they make you feel so cheap and used.

Oh, and reservations… you have to make them but they don’t mean much. We reserved a 10′ a month in advance, but lo and behold, there was only the finely tuned 14′ mentioned above available. And no, they didn’t give it to us at the reserved price even though they should have.

But hey, if you’re a mechanic and need , then UHaul is made for you. If you have no mechanical knowledge or would just like to make your move as hassle free as possible, then UHaul is not your cup of tea and you’d do well to look elsewhere for a do it yourself .
