I’ve rented trucks three times from U-Haul. The first was a local move and all went well. The second was a cross-country from L.A. to Wisconsin using their largest truck and pulling a car. The truck blew a lot of smoke even for a diesel but I foolishly went with it. The problem was, once fully loaded, the engine load was much higher and the smoke was like a three day car fire in the unsafest vehicle I’ve ever been in. Top speed was 45 mph; I was passed by old semis in Colorado for cripes sake! No air conditioning existed for this August move and the oil smoke was visible in the cab all day. It took 47 quarts of oil to get me home. That’s no exaggeration - 47 quarts.
Years later my wife and I were just married and moving to Florida from Wisconsin. We each sold our houses and our final departure point was from her house the day before the new owners were to move in. I had researched movers and gave U-Haul another shot due to the price difference. (Dork) The web site was adamant about the efficiency and speed of booking online so I did - with a six week lead time. The day of the move I was there bright and early and the clerk says (quoting now), “Oh, we don’t go by that internet booking thing. You gotta stop in and tell us you need a truck. Sorry.” That was it; no truck, no further help, just “next!” and move on. I didn’t have time to even torch the place let alone consult an attorney though, either one looked good to me. It took us two days to track down another truck along with a great deal of hardship involving moving our whole lives into the garage and driveway so the new owners could move in and, no, they were not happy about it. The worst part about it was the smarmy freak who found us a truck at a different location went on and on about what a favor he was doing for us by finding us a vehicle on “such short notice”. We needed the truck too much for me to flatten him…and I’m thinking he knew it.
