Most of the U-haul horror stories involve vehicles that were reserved but not available, etc. I ‘discovered’ another way that U-Haul can take advantage of a customer.
U-haul has no way to check which drop-off location is closest to your final destination. If you live on / near the border of two or more cities there can be a sizable difference in the rental fee (In my case $100.00) U-Haul will not tell you this. If you return your rental to a location that has a lower price, the return location is not supposed to tell you this.
If you realize that you were overcharged, customer service will not negotiate, insisting that it is the customer fault for not asking for multiple quotes (like the phone reservationist will indulge multiple requests…)
Phone calls to the U-Haul customer service line are met with comments like, “You don’t want to speak with a manager – you’ll waste your time” or “ You can send a written complaint, but it will just end up on my desk…”
Letters to U-Haul CEO Edward Shoen are responded to with a pre-printed post card (apparently he get so many) that states that a customer service representative will contact you (so you can hear more comments like the ones posted above).
Bottom line: U-Haul customer service does not provide service to the customer. They are aggressive and argumentative. They are there to tell you why you are wrong. They are not concerned if they lose you as a future customer, and evidently not concerned that their actions lead to posts like this.
