Lucky to be alive U Haul
I almost died due to U Haul’s incompetence U Haul You read that correctly - both I as well as my girlfriend are lucky to be alive due to the incredible incompetence of U-Haul. We rented a la...
UHAUL sucked me alive U Haul This is a true story. I rented a Uhaul trailer. The staff told me that I have to be back by 7 pm the same day I rented it. I wasn't sure...
I rented a U-Haul trailer which suddenly came off the hitch of my SUV (on smooth highway) and began violently fishtailing. The trailer swung back and forth on the chains as I slowed to stop, still in complete control of the car. One chain then came off (there are no locking mechanisms holding the chains on, only an open hook). The trailer jumped a ditch, went up an embankment and slammed to a stop. The car was then violently jerked by the remaining chain and FLIPPED OVER twice landing upright. Thanks to seat belts and the bulk of a Toyota Forerunner, my brother and I survived unscathed in an accident that witnesses were sure resulted in serious injuries.
U-Haul’s service and response were absolutely HORRIBLE from the moment of the accident on, a story that continues three years later. We were promised another trailer (duh, the car is totaled, we can’t use a trailer), then a truck. For two days we stayed in a hotel while the national office assured us a truck was coming. In numerous conversations, there were 14 completely clueless automatons reading from a script that began “we are sorry for your inconvenience” and one intelligent, caring human being who couldn’t help us either as no trucks were available on a holiday weekend (despite the automatons’ assurances). No truck ever arrived and a friend finally came to deliver us and our belongings.
U-Haul flatly refused all my claims, immediately and consistently blaming “driver error”. I was not charged in any way and the officer investigating the accident did not believe I was at fault. U-Haul’s engineer never spoke with me or saw the 40 pictures taken of the accident scene that clearly show what happened. His rubber stamp was “driver error” with no further comment on what that “error” might be. Their claims adjuster told me “it’s always the driver’s mistake” and “our equipment doesn’t fail”.
My insurance company’s engineer did a much more thorough investigation and concluded that the trailer hitch and hook-up were faulty and resulted in the trailer coming off the hitch. My insurance company fought unsuccessfully to have their claim paid by U-Haul and considered legal action but concluded that U-Haul is so notoriously difficult to deal with that the claim wasn’t worth the effort.
U-Haul’s insurance categorically denied my claim for damaged goods and expenses related to the accident. Their method seems to be continuous denial until the issue is dropped. Unfortunately since we were not physically “harmed”, my lawyers do not think a claim is worth pursuing (I’d be better off financially if I were mauled or dead!)
To add insult to injury, two YEARS later U-Haul filed a claim against ME to pay for $1800 damage to the trailer, since they consider me at fault. So far, I’ve used their tactics and refused to pay them, but they are threatening legal action.
So, steer WAY clear of U-Haul. Their customer service is abysmal, their equipment is dangerous, they flatly refuse to pay claims, and they may blame YOU for their poor performance.
