The experience I and the Harbor Labor Day Parade had with U Haul, in the previous five years, was above average.
This year I was told that I could not rent a one way truck for five days over the Labor Day weekend at their Lakewood California location. The management said that I could not rent a truck for five days and offered no explanation or solution. This made me mad at their attitude since I worked in the trailer rental industry for, my father, many years. I would go out of my way to help a customer, even to the point of calling competitors to help the customer. U Haul has lost the concept of customer service at their Lakewood CA store.
I was told I would have to move my Street Barricades, bring back the truck then pick it up on Labor Day, reload the truck, do my delivery, then bring it back the same day. In order to return the Street Barricades I would have to rent the truck again on Tuesday after Labor Day , load my barricades, return them to the City of Los Angeles then return the truck. I am handicapped and did not have the volunteers to unload the truck.
U Haul Management did not try to help find a solution to my problem except to say call the 800 number. When I called the 800 number I was told that I could only reserve the truck for one day but that since it was a one way truck that it did not matter how long I kept it.
When I was going to pick up the truck I was told that I could not purchase the “Safe Mov” insurance because it did not say I wanted the insurance on my reservation. I insisted which took the employee three times to get it right in the computer.
The truck that was rented was a fourteen foot ‘DC’ model. It performed flawlessly as in the previous five years I had rented ‘DC” model trucks. The tires were inflated properly, oil and fluid levels were at optimum and the mirrors did not move.
When I returned the truck on the Tuesday after Labor Day to the Torrance CA U Haul Store, I expressed how much trouble I had had at the Lakewood CA location. He explained to me that U haul was short on equipment this summer. He also expressed dismay at the state of customer service at their Lakewood CA Store. He told me to come to his store next year and that I would be properly taken care of.
