I’ve participated in many U-Haul based moves — both of my own things and when helping out friends. A few of these moves have been hassle free, but most of them have not. The UHaul problems I have encountered over the years include:

1. Being given a 27ft truck instead of a 10ft truck for driving in areas and streets too narrow for such a vehicle. But despite our reservations it was our only choice because the truck we were supposed to use had been stolen.

2. A complete steering failure of the truck when it was fully loaded. This was very frightening and caused us to wreak havoc in the streets of Manhattan. It took 30 minutes on hold with UHaul to get assistance. They immediately offered to bring us a new truck, but through some miracle the failure occured right by our destination. I told them we didn’t need a new truck, but just needed someone to deal with this one once we got it unloaded. Several hours later repair people arrived who just kept walking around the truck and didn’t know what to do. They called UHaul back and requested other repair people who were eventually able to help.

3. No trucks being available despite reservations such that I had to go down the street to rent a Ryder for considerably more money. That said, that hassle-free quality of that experience was worth it.

There aren’t many alternatives to Uhaul, and certanily none that are as cheap. If you can afford it, go with something like Ryder, or hire professional movers. No move is easy, but its worth your money to have it be less annoying than UHaul is.
