Never ever go with U haul! U Haul
Where to begin with U-haul? My most recent experience with them was actually with my best friend, who recently moved from Minnesota to Phoenix, AZ. He had reserved a truck from the U-haul website about 2 months before he moved. The day before we were scheduled to leave MN, he got a call from U-haul saying that the place he originally intended to get his truck from couldn’t accommodate him. They eventually found another location in Minneapolis. We both went there, as I was going to be driving the truck for him.
When we got to the new location, we were told, by rude employees, that they didn’t have any record of his reservation, and didn’t have a truck available for him. They had the size truck he wanted, but they had it reserved for someone else, and they weren’t going to do anything to help my best friend. One of the employees called up regional headquarters, and I spoke to the very nice woman on the phone who apologized for the inconvenience. My best friend called the reservation number and was speaking to somewhere there. After we had been at this location for well over an hour, the regional woman I was speaking to finally told the counter guy to give us the 17 foot truck that was already there, and she would call the people who were suppose to be picking it up the next morning and explain the situation to them.
Not only has my best friend had a negative experience with them, so has my mother, brother, and myself. In all of these cases, we all rented our trucks online, and then the day we went to pick them up, they didn’t have the promised equipment, even though we had made reservations well in advance. In all 3 instances, we had to drive at least 60 miles one way to another location to pick up a truck, because of U-haul’s gross incompetence.
U-haul never does anything to make it right, other than to given an insincere apology and to usually give you more miles, which is useless as they’re already generous enough with the miles. When my mom rented her truck, they gave her an additional 600 miles to do a move that was less than 200 miles, on top of the 350 miles they had originally given her. When my best friend rented, they didn’t do anything to make it right.
If they really wanted to make it right, they should’ve offered free insurance for the truck, or a discount on the rental fee, not extra miles.
Go with another truck rental company. You will save yourself tons of heartache and time. U-haul may be the cheapest, but in the long run, you’re losing valuable time to make up for their mistakes. I’d rather pay the extra money to go with a company like Budget, who I’ve never had a problem with. If you ABSOLUTELY have to go with U-haul, DO NOT use their website to make a reservation. Call up your local U-haul store and do it over the phone or in person.
It honestly amazes me that this company is still in business with how they treat their customers, and how they give people the run-around.
