I’ve used U-Haul for three moves, to date. My wife and I are planning to make our next move to a house, but we don’t plan to do it for a couple of years and we feel that when you move into a house, you’re grown up enough to let someone else do all the moving for you. So, hopefully, my days with U-Haul are over, except when it comes to helping others move.
MOVE #1
The first move was from Seattle to Los Angeles. I picked the truck up from a U-Haul center. The truck was completely loaded and we attached the car trailer and then realized my Audi was too low to the ground to actually make it up onto the trailer.
We took the trailer back to the U-Haul dealership. They were closed, so we called the 1-800 number. They said it was fine to leave the trailer there, that we should leave a note with it and that on Monday when they were open, they would credit my credit card for the trailer.
We set off, my travelling partner getting stuck driving my car down instead of riding with me in the truck. (Fortunately, I had already bought them a plane ticket back, figuring they could accompany me on the trip down so it wouldn’t be so quiet.)
The worst part? Even when the truck’s spedometer registered speeds over 85, the car’s spedometer registered 65. Apparently there was some kind of governor. Also, no one warned me about what happens when you run a diesel truck out of gas. I coasted into a gas station and Geico found a mechanic for me, but refused to cover it since it wasn’t my car. I was lucky I had gotten off the freeway, but that sure wasn’t fun.
I smashed the truck into a low-overhang at my new apartment complex. Foolishly, I climbed into the truck to try to see if I could hammer out the dent (it’s the small rounded corner piece at the front). That didn’t work and I apparently loosened it because somewhere on the freeway the piece disappeared. (I feel kinda bad about that.)
They didn’t charge me for the missing truck piece, but they never credited me for the returned trailer and returned all of my deposit except for about $10 for miles over the limit (even though they had only my word that the trailer had been left in Seattle.)
MOVE #2
I got the U-Haul truck from a mechanic who offered U-Haul rentals. It wasn’t nearly as convenient, they were out in the middle of nowhere. The place was really dirty and kinda scary. I don’t remember from the first trip, but you had to bring it back full of diesel or get charged a lot to fill up the tank. I wish it were more like rental cars where you have the option of buying the tank of gas and can just return it empty or nearly empty.
MOVE #3
I got the truck from a U-Haul center. I was also able to buy boxes designed to hold plates and glasses. They worked really well. I reserved a furniture dolly (flat) and a utility dolly (the big ones for moving refrigerators). Well, the day I went to pick up the truck they were out of furniture dollys. They didn’t charge me for the furniture dolly and gave me some crude homemade piece of plywood with wheels screwed into the corner. It worked surprisingly well. I also, against my better judgement, didn’t check the truck before I left. They had forgotten to put the utility dolly in. They said come back and they’d give me credit for the mileage and not charge me for the missing utility dolly. I came back in my wife’s Hyuandai and the guy had to stand by and watch as I got it in there because a utility dolly is very huge and he was unable to get it into the little car. Beyond that, the process went very smoothly. When I returned to get my deposit back, they ended up giving me the furniture dolly, the utility dolly and the regular dolly (the ones that are in the truck that you get charged $5 if you use) for free, and gave me mileage credit for the miles I drove in my wife’s car back to the center to pick-up the dolly.
Originally, I had tried to arrange move #3 online and it didn’t work (they didn’t offer in town online — the site said check back in a few months). I wrote to them telling them how I wished they’d had online reservations and that I was probably going to go with Ryder because they did (Ryder never called me back from the request I submitted). They quickly wrote back saying that they did have online reservations and I had to write again and the guy finally noted that I was correct, they didn’t have it, for in-town.
If you have to go U-Haul, I definitely recommend going to an actual U-Haul owned and operated center, if at all possible, to get your truck. We reserved it one week before we needed it and the day we got there, it was ready and waiting, and they did more than they needed to to make up for their mistakes (not having a promised item, forgetting to put something into the truck) and so I’d have to recommend them. The entire staff (Burbank) was really pleasant, too.
