All about Uhaul
I do not want to get into too much detail and be forced to re-live our horrible experience. Basically, they never had our truck, despite the fact that we had a ‘reservation.’ We called many times, dealt with morons, and sat on hold for hours. The customer service people were rude, incompetent, uncaring, and soulless. If there is a g-d, he will strike down this company soon.
Here is a copy of my complaint sent to U-Haul. I have yet to hear a response.
I made over a 1,000 mile trip and was given a truck that:
Would be 12 miles to the gallon and it was more like 5.
Was running on 7 cylinders
Kept running hot
Broken passenger side window
Leaking cab and half my things inside got wet
Had bad power steering
My wife and I reserved a U-haul truck to move across town two weeks before we needed it. When we arrived at the U-haul center, the overworked clerk reluctantly expressed to us that while he was perfectly aware of our truck reservation, no truck would be available. He indicated to us that he became aware of this problem the day before we were scheduled to pick up the truck, but admitted to not bothering to notify us. We were given absolutely no notice and had relied on the reservation.

My experience with U-Haul began in April. We were moving to a new city, approximately three hours away, so I visited our local U-Haul rental store and put a deposit down on 17-ft. truck.
The rental agent we dealt with was rude and very un-helpful. There was only one truck available, which was dirty both inside and out. The steering and brakes also needed work, but our only option was to drive over an hour to rent a truck from a different dealer.

We asked for a 24 footer a week in advance and was promised it would be ready. Wrong, they never got us one! We had to use a 27 footer which only got 3.5 miles to a gallon of gas.
The next thing that we found out was wrong was the cargo lights didn’t work while we were loading the truck. Now that may not sound like a major issue but it was for me as i had to get back to my job.
We rented a 26 ft diesel truck to move my 82 year old father from Overland Park KS to Salida Co. Told u-haul we needed a solid truck as we had to climb the mountains with a full load. Picked up the truck Sunday afternoon but the agent did not have the 48 pads we had reserved and sent us across town to pick those up. Loaded the truck the on Monday and left for Colorado at 05:45 Tuesday morning. Noticed immediately that the lights on the truck seemed to be a little dim and that the 5 speed manual transmission popped out of 4th gear every time you tried to use it. This is not a good thing when you have the rocky mountains in front of you! As we proceed in bad weather the lights on the truck grow dimmer, also the engine temp gauge is not working and the windshield washers are not working. At this point we knew we have an alternator problem so we shut down everything electrical that we could. We then contacted u-haul hotline via cell phone and asked if there was a service location along I70 that we could stop at and we were told that we had to be broken down and that then they would dispatch someone out of Denver to come and fix the truck. I said that we were moving and I wanted them to dispatch someone to meet us in Colorado Springs at a specific time and place. They then said to call them back when we were closer to the springs. At this point, half way across Kansas nothing electrical on the truck is working. No lights, turn signals, brake lights, wipers, gauges (accept the fuel gauge) and the only saving grace was that Diesels just keep on working. To make a long story u-haul refused to have a repair truck meet us in the springs and would only dispatch once we had stopped so we drove on with nothing working to our destination arriving slightly after dark. We charged the 2 batteries all night and the next day while unloaded the truck and turned the POS in. Then called u-haul to try and get a partial credit on the rental based on all of the trouble that we had and guess what….. Nothing, nota. Never again is all I can tell you.

During my last move, about a year and half ago, I decided to rent one of their trucks for $19.95. I was moving locally so I could return it to where I rented it. I new I would have to pay mileage and insurance(believe me, you better get this), so it would obviously cost me more than the price that is plastered all over their trucks. There is only one way you can pay that price, and that is to rent it, leave it on the lot and then return the keys. Even then there would be tax. In the end I paid about $95 even though I bought my own gas and did not buy packaging supplies or anything extra. There were fees on top of fees to rent that thing (I can’t remember exactly what for, just that it was outrageous).

Moving is a real pain, regardless of how far you are going or how much furniture and belongings you have. In my last few moves I have been fortunate enough to have professional movers do all of the heavy lifting for me. However, the last move that I was involved in did not have that luxury. We had to do it the old-fashioned way: ourselves. Therefore, we had the experience of going and getting the good ol U-Haul truck to aid us in our move. As often happens with U-Haul, it was an adventure from start to finish.

I booked my truck in advance ..they guranteed me the truck and when on the day of moving i went to pick up the truck..the truck was not available. On top of that the general manager by the name of Kieth Overton was rude and abusive to me. He didnt even call any other uhaul stores to arrange a truck.Finally i got the truck after 5-6 hrs of stuggle. When i was on my way to new home the truck stopped and never started again…my last weekend was a nightmare…i advice anyone not to do business with UHAUL because they sucK.Their truck are old and crappy ..they overbook their trucks..
dont get a uhaul truck even for free.
